Voters in Katy ISD will vote on $676 million 2021 bond package in May

KATY, Texas โ€“ Katy Independent School District Board of trustees met Monday evening to discuss a 2021 bond package. Katy ISD Board President Ashley Vann said the district is expected to exceed 100,000 students by 2030, and it needs many improvements to accommodate. Monday at the 5:30 p.m. virtual board meeting, Katy ISD trustees were presented with the Community Bond Advisory Committeeโ€™s recommended 2021 bond package. โ€Katy ISD district grows about 2,500 students a year,โ€ Vann said. The Katy ISD tax rate will not increase.

Prayer vigil held for Tompkins High School student injured in violent crash

On Sunday, friends, family and many others gathered at a Chick Fil A in Katy where he works for a candlelight prayer vigil. โ€œFather God we just come before you with these sweet children on behalf of their brother Sam,โ€ one woman said. Sam is 17 years old and is a senior student at Tompkins High School in Katy. Sam is a wide receiver and Head Football Coach Todd McVey says Sam is a good kid who can do it all. Katy High School football star kicked off team, now suing to be reinstated

KATY โ€“ A star quarterback for Katy High School, who made headlines last year for being caught on camera using a racial slur, is once again off the football team. Now, he is suing Katy ISD to be reinstated. The 19-year-old student was suspended in September after a Katy ISD police and a K-9 found a substance they believed to be marijuana in Bronsonโ€™s vehicle during a search of the Katy H.S. But in a letter dated September 28, less than two weeks after the incident, the Katy ISD superintendent Dr. Ken Gregorski appeared to clear McClelland of any wrongdoing. A spokesperson for Katy ISD would not answer questions about the case.

Katy ISD closes elementary school for COVID-19 outbreak

KATY, TEXAS โ€“ Katy ISD closed Nottingham Country Elementary Thursday after a COVID-19 outbreak on campus. Seventeen students and five staff members tested positive for COVID-19, according to the districtโ€™s online dashboard. The district sent a letter to parents saying officials would notify those who came in direct contact with the 22 people. Katy ISD closed Seven Lakes High School when at least 43 students tested positive for COVID-19 last week. Starting Friday, Katy ISD is offering free COVID-19 testing for students.

Katy ISD superintendent gives State of the District Address

KATY, Texas โ€“ Katy ISD Superintendent Ken Gregorski gave the State of the District Address Friday morning on YouTube. Katy ISD students earned top scores on national assessments and won a number of statewide championships in music and sports. โ€œThe on-site testing facility for rapid testing will be for our employees and their dependents who are insured with the district. As far as we know we are the only ones in the state doing this to mitigate COVID-19,โ€ said Katy ISD Superintendent, Ken Gregorski. The Katy ISD COVID-19 Testing Facility is located at the Agriculture Sciences Center, 5825 Katy Hockley Cut-Off Road, Katy, TX 77493.

โ€˜Teddy Copโ€™: Katy ISD officer teaching kids that the uniform means safety, friendship

HOUSTON โ€“ Katy ISD Police Department Officer Luis Santiago is known as โ€œThe Teddy Cop.โ€He hands out bears to special needs students and lets them know that the uniform represents protection, safety and friendship, among other things. โ€œThe teddy bear and the police uniform is a learning tool," he said. "It teaches them not to be afraid. And now with coronavirus, being that everyone has to wear a mask, Teddy Cop wears the mask to say stay safe, you gotta wear your mask.โ€Santiago started the program five years ago and has given out 2,100 bears. He hopes other school districts will do something similar.

Katy ISD board president discusses lower property tax rate, name proposals for campus

KATY, Texas โ€“ The president of the Katy Independent School District board released a digital message to parents and staff about Septemberโ€™s achievements, new campuses, how the district will cope with a lowered tax rate, among other topics. Board President Courtney Doyle welcomed students back to the fall semester, saying nearly 84,000 students are enrolled in 68 of its campuses. Tax rate decreaseThe district will be saving its taxpayers this year after board trustees approved a drop in the school tax rate of 5.43 cents per $100 valuation. New name proposal for new campusDuring Septemberโ€™s board meeting, it was recommended for Junior High #17 to be named Bill and Cindy Haskett Junior High for the new campus. Cindy Haskett taught math at Katy Junior High from 1980 until she retired in 2005, culminating 33 years in public education.

Katy ISD will provide free meals to all students living in the area until December

KATY, Texas โ€“ The Katy Independent School District is providing free meals to all students in the area, even if they arenโ€™t part of the district, after the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and Texas Department of Agriculture (TDA) extended the food program waiver, the district announced. Katy ISD began providing meals Monday and students can receive free breakfast and lunch through Dec. 31, or pending available funds through the USDA and TDA. โ€œAll students are eligible for one breakfast and one lunch meal per day per federal guidance,โ€ said Nutrition & Food Service Executive Director Donna Pittenger. โ€œParents can however add funds to their studentโ€™s Pay N' Go meal account for a la carte purchases or in preparation for when the USDA waiver ends,โ€ she added. Once the waiver expires, Katy ISD will switch back to the National School Lunch and Breakfast Program, according to a press release.

Mayde Creek High School QB arrested, faces 4 counts of aggravated robbery with a deadly weapon

KATY, Texas โ€“ Mayde Creek High School quarterback Donte Jones, 18, is facing four counts of aggravated robbery with a deadly weapon after being arrested by Houston police with assistance from Katy Independent School District Police Thursday. Officials say Jones and three others were gathered at an apartment complex in the 18600 block of South Parkview Drive on August 22, according to court records. One of the victims identified Jones to police saying heโ€™s seen Jones before because they both attended Katy ISDโ€™s Opportunity Awareness Center alternative school. โ€œOn September 17, 2020, the Katy ISD Police at the request of the Houston Police Department (HPD), assisted in the arrest of student Donte Jones. The arrest pertains to an HPD case, and details regarding possible charges should be directed to that agency," Katy ISD officials wrote in part in a statement to KPRC 2.

2 Houston-area public school districts named โ€˜best in-state employers,โ€™ according to Forbes

HOUSTON โ€“ Two Houston-area public school districts, Katy and Clear Creek ISDs, were named as one of the countryโ€™s best in-state employers, according to Forbes Magazineโ€™s second annual ranking of Americaโ€™s Best Employers by State. Katy ISD was ranked No. 2 while Clear Creek ISD was at No. This marks the second time Katy ISD made this list, ranking as No. 22 best employers to work for in Texas.

David Hasselhoff welcomes back Katy ISD to in-person learning and it is everything

KATY, Texas โ€“ Students at Katy Independent School District returned to in-person classes this week after three weeks of virtual learning. It was a high-stress week for parents, teachers and students worried about going back to school amid a pandemic, so to wrap up the week, the district shared a legendary โ€œwelcome backโ€ video. The message was sent from none other than David Hasselhoff and it was everything you would expect from The Hoff. โ€œAfter six months of virtual learning, the students of Katy ISD will return face-to-face, mask-to-mask with the other awesome teachers on Tuesday (Sept. 8),โ€ Hasselhoff said in the video. I know the kids are so excited.โ€According to the district, the video was provided by a Katy ISD parent as a โ€œspecial surprise for back to school.โ€We arenโ€™t sure if the kids in school know who Hasselhoff is, but one can only hope they appreciated the epic-ness of the video.

Katy ISD, several other districts plan to start in-person learning Tuesday

HOUSTON Several major school districts plan to welcome some students back to campus Tuesday amid the coronavirus pandemic. With about half of Katy Independent School Districts students returning to campuses, parents will be armed with a new and necessary tool. Because its been hard on online work, said Carlee Staton, a Katy student. That includes pregnant mom Sachet Harrold, who has two kids online and health concerns about the baby on the way. However, because they werent able to get devices to all the students, HISD will open 36 campuses as digital learning centers for elementary and middle school students who need them.

Katy ISD to open rapid COVID-19 testing site for employees to help mitigate spread of virus

KATY, Texas The Katy Independent School District announced this week that will open a COVID-19 rapid testing site for its employees to help slow the spread of the virus as students plan to return to class. The testing site will open to district staff only and hours of operation will be from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday. Heres who can qualify to get tested at this free site:Katy ISD employees potentially exposed to a positive case at work, or outside of workKaty ISD employees qualifying dependents under the Katy ISD Health PlanKaty ISD employees who are uninsured with Katy ISD (no family or spouses)Testing will be based on a first-come, first-serve basis. Thursday, the District launched its COVID-19 Case Dashboard, providing parents with a robust tool to keep themselves updated during this ongoing global health crisis. The Texas Education Agency (TEA) recently directed all Texas school districts to submit weekly reports on positive COVID-19 cases based on data from the previous week. The COVID-19 Case Dashboard is easy to navigate and is updated every night to provide parents the most up to date information.What is it? Data on the Dashboard is displayed by districtwide active cases, as well as cases by staff, students and campus. Anyone interested can find more information about the dashboard, Katy ISDs self-reporting app and the employee testing site online.

Katy ISD students kickoff school year virtually

KATY, Texas โ€“ Katy ISD is set to begin the school year with a virtual start on Wednesday morning. More than 85,000 k-12th grade will begin the school year with online learning. Katy ISD Superintendent Dr. Ken Gregorski said that the district has been working for weeks to make sure that students have the technology needed to begin the school year. So we feel that our system is up and ready and functional to handle the capacity that it will need for students to get online,โ€ the superintendent said. All the way from when you get on the bus where every child getting on school transportation is required to wear a mask.

Local school districts give Judge Hidalgos school reopening plan a failing grade

KATY, Texas Harris County's roadmap to reopening schools plan is experiencing a few bumps as local districts are giving the idea a failing grade. I see the point of view, said Nour Elyaed, a former Katy ISD student with siblings still in teh district. But also I think it can definitely be challenged because there are people who have been homeschooled before and it wasnt much of an issue.Parent Dionne Sames said she believes students should definitely return to class at some point. Maybe its a phased approach by, grade or something, Sames said. The state in large part has given local districts the leeway to decide exactly when to return to class.

Humble ISD, Katy ISD set to restart Strength & Conditioning Camps Wednesday

"I got word late this afternoon that we had the green light to start tomorrow if we'd like," Humble ISD Athletic Director Troy Kite said about restarting Strength & Conditioning Camps. As of 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Katy ISD and Humble ISD had announced their intentions to restart Strength & Conditioning Camps starting Wednesday, July 29. The very next tweet on their timeline, quoting Humble ISD Athletics Tuesday announcement - "WE'RE BACK!!!!! For Humble ISD, the district had been hosting Strength & Conditioning Camps since June 8, when the University Interscholastic League made it where those could resume. Humble ISD has been very active in getting input from the parents of their students through surveys that have been conducted throughout the summer.

Katy ISD launches new Smart Restart website, highlights reopening plan for students and staff

KATY, Texas Katy ISD unveiled their 2020-2021 school year reopening plan on a separate website for parents and students. The website, called Smart Restart, highlights important links for students who wish to return to school in person, and those who want to return online. It also includes resources for parents like safety protocols at all campuses and FAQ pages. The district unveiled two methods of learning: on-campus and virtual, also known as the Katy Virtual Academy. Parents and students who want to enroll in Katy Virtual Academy may do it between July 20 and August 5.

Katy ISD announced on July 23 that it will begin the school year with three weeks of online learning. Officials, parents react to TEA guidelines, STARR testing requirement for upcoming school year

Parents raised many concerns, including STARR testing being put back on the calendar for the upcoming school year. Katy Independent School District officials are working on a safety plan that will give parents the option of both online or in-person instruction. The district plans to finalize its plans within the next few weeks. STARR testing to resumeWhile school officials attempt to get students and teachers back safely, parents are not happy with the STARR testings back on the schedule. To send back or home school? Katy ISD asking parentsโ€™ feedback on reopening schools

KATY, Texas โ€“ Katy Independent School District is asking parents several questions in a survey, including what they want to do this fall semester when schools reopen. The survey asks if parents want to send their children back to school or keep them home and continue online learning? On Monday, Katy ISD parents got a video message from Superintendent Ken Gregorski asking parents to fill out the survey. Gregorski adds, parents, will be able to choose from in-person classes, to online learning, or both. Other parents told KPRC 2 they are OK with the older kids going back.

This is how Katy ISD is recognizing its graduates who enlisted in the military

With graduating ceremonies beginning June 17, many Katy ISD seniors who have enlisted in the military will miss the long-awaited day due to event postponements as a result of the coronavirus. In order to recognize these brave students, Katy ISD created a special graduation video honoring its class of 2020 military enlistees for their high school achievements and decision to serve the nation. Katy ISD reports more than 80 of its graduating seniors have enlisted in the military, with the majority joining the Army or Marine Corps. Katy ISD offers to house displaced animals after Rodeo Houston shutdown

KATY, Texas โ€“ After the City of Houston, Harris County and health department leaders canceled the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo due to coronavirus concerns, competition animals from across the country scheduled to be housed at Reliant Park needed to be removed from the site as well. Rodeo officials said they reached out to local partners, including Katy Independent School District, to assist with accommodating participantsโ€™ animals by providing barn shelter overnight. On Wednesday at 7 p.m., Katy ISD opened doors to their Gerald D. Young Agricultural Sciences Center, located at 5825 Katy Hockley Cut Off Rd. to all Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo participants who are in need of housing for their competition animals. Katy ISD personnel, including teachers, grounds staff and law enforcement, were on-site to greet and assist the animal guests.

Several Mayde Creek Junior High students hospitalized due to cellphone battery smoke, district says

KATY, Texas โ€“ Several Mayde Creek Junior High students were sent to area hospitals Friday after a cellphone battery began to smoke, according to Katy Independent School District spokeswoman Maria DiPetta. According to the Harris County Fire Marshalโ€™s Office, investigators determined several students were playing with an old cellphone by taking it apart. Investigators said one of the students was playing with the battery, causing it to overheat, bulge and smoke. Those students were taken to our nurseโ€™s office and those that suffered from smoke inhalation were transported by our EMS units,โ€ Dipetta said. Officials with the West Lake Fire Department said the smoke was caused by battery failure.

Katy ISD approves measures to bring relief to busing needs

KATY, Texas โ€“ The Katy Independent School District Board of Trustees approved two measures Monday that it hopes will help improve the transportation of students. โ€œThe camera system upgrade will provide the latest in technology and safety measures available in school bus transportation,โ€ said Ted Vierling, Katyโ€™s assistant superintendent of operations. The agreement with GoldStar Transit, a Texas-based transportation company, will service at least 40 bus routes for Katy. GoldStar already provides service to school districts such as Fort Bend ISD, Bastrop ISD, Waco ISD, and Navasota ISD. The GoldStar drivers will go through the same training as Katy ISD bus drivers and the companyโ€™s buses will display Katy ISD signage and the equipment will be on level with standards set by the school district for all of its buses.

Katy ISD responds to claims student was raped at Mayde Creek High School

KATY, Texas โ€“ Katy Independent School District police confirmed Thursday they are investigating allegations that a 16-year-old girl was attacked and raped in a secluded hallway near the cafeteria at Mayde Creek High School about 11:30 a.m. Nov. 22. Sexual assault is an incident that campus administration and Katy ISD police investigate thoroughly to ensure student and staff safety. The safety of our students at MCHS and throughout Katy ISD is our utmost priority. I appreciate your support and understanding as we continue our investigation with the Katy ISD Police Department. KPRC 2 spoke with district officials who said a Katy ISD detective tried to contact the girl and her mother, but they were uncooperative.

Katy ISD releases renderings showing $58 million football stadium

KATY, Texas โ€“ Katy ISD has released renderings showing what its new $58 million football stadium will look like. This will be the second football stadium in the district. The district Tuesday released pictures showing a fan's-eye view of what will become the new stadium that will seat 12,000 people. The district will also leave the second floor of the building empty for future expansion and will include a high school football hall of fame. The new stadium was part of a $748 million school bond package that was approved by voters last November.

Mega screens popular in high school football stadiums

The Houston Independent School District paid a total $530,838 for two new scoreboards put up this year at Butler and Barnett Stadiums. At Texas' newest and largest high school stadium in Allen, a Dallas suburb, a custom scoreboard towers 75 feet above a new $60 million football stadium with enough room to seat 18,000 fans. The high-resolution HD screen is 38 feet wide by 23 feet tall, according to Jeff Chaney with the Allen Independent School District athletic department. Katy ISD also funds their mega screen scoreboard at Rhodes stadium with advertising dollars. "All of these are outdoor classrooms as well as football stadiums," said Debbie Decker, Katy ISD athletic director.
