Security guards at Katy ISD will now carry guns; Does this make you feel safer sending your students to class?

KATY, Texas – Major changes are coming to the Katy Independent School District, and one in particular may be concerning to parents.

According to Katy ISD officials, the district will now have Level 3 security officers with guns on campus at different schools.

The change, which starts on Monday, means that guards will be walking around with guns holstered on their security belts.

The job posting listed on Katy ISD’s website stated that the starting salary for these guards is $40,000.

To be hired, those interested have to meet the following requirements.

Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Level 3-Armed Security Officer License
  • Must pass a Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI) psychological examination
  • Experience as a security guard, preferred
  • Texas Driver License
  • Must not have a history of criminal activity
  • Ability to record information
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instruction
  • Ability to work effectively with students
  • Ability to communicate effectively
  • Must have a working knowledge of personal and property security techniques and electronic security systems
  • Possess skills and interest in working within an educational environment
  • Possess the sensitivity and maturity to work effectively with students

At this time, it is unclear if all Katy ISD schools will have armed guards starting on Monday or if the policy will be rolled out in sections.
