Cypress-Fairbanks ISD athletic director Ray Zepeda has been named the new athletic director of the UIL. The Corpus Christi-native has been in public education for three decades in positions such as an athletic director, head coach and athletic coordinator. He has been in Corpus Christi ISD, Houston ISD, Mathis ISD and Galena Park ISD, before working for CFISD for a decade.

We are already halfway through the UIL Spring season. Time sure does fly. Cy Woods has had a tremendous tournament season and a quick start in district play. The Wildcats have a strong pitching staff and a balanced batting lineup. The UIL and TAPPS postseason is coming to a point. The TAPPS State Weekend starts Friday, while the Regional Finals for UIL will determine the State’s Final Four.

Argyle Boys Golf was back at the UIL State Tournament for the 11th consecutive season. This year, the Eagles were able to bring home gold as the team won their fourth team championship at the UIL Class 4A State Golf Tournament.

As a first-year program, Prosper Rock Hill has had everything to prove this baseball season. Despite being brand new to the diamond, the Blue Hawks have shown nothing but true grit and a desire to succeed. This proved to be true in their one-game UIL Class 5A bi-district playoff matchup against W.T. White on Thursday.

As teams continue to push towards the biggest stage in Texas high school softball, tension continues to rise. Last week, area teams competed in the UIL Area-Round of playoffs. This week, we head into Regional Quarterfinals.

Flower Mound sophomore Abigail Counts came up big at the UIL Class 5A state track meet on Friday in Austin, Texas. Not only did Counts win two gold medals and a silver medal, but she set a new state record.

McKinney North's Alexandra "Sasha" Harber made her debut at the UIL Class 5A state meet on Friday and set a new school record as she took gold in pole vaulting. The sophomore rallied from a miserable-looking whiff on her opening height of 11-0 before winning her first state title at 13-0.

Mesquite Poteet's Kendrick Smallwood brought a state title home on Friday as he won the UIL Class 5A boys 110-meter hurdles. The junior finished with a wind-aided time of 13.47.

After overcoming an injury during cross country season (obtained while attending a football game), Denton Ryan senior Jackson Parrish is a UIL Class 5A state champion in the boys 800-meter race.

Midlothian Heritage continues to prove their athletic excellence with the endeavors of various athletes. At the UIL Class 4A state competition, the Lady Jaguars' Leah Anderson earned not one, but two gold medals as well as a silver medal.

Dallas ISD has bragging rights this year with a UIL Track and Field State Title. Madison High School girls track took gold in the 4x200 relay in UIL Class 3A on Thursday.

Kennedale senior and Houston Baptist University signee, Brianna Brand, helped lead Kennedale Track and Field to a UIL Class 4A overall state championship title. The Wildcats topped second-place Canyon by 14 points and third-place Melissa by 52!

The light at the regular season tunnel is growing bigger and bigger. UIL district certifications are in 13 days and the playoffs begin four days later; TAPPS playoffs begin next week.

Midlothian Heritage and Celina are set to face off in the UIL Class 4A State Semifinals early Tuesday evening. Before the teams hit the pitch, let's take a look at what got them to this point.

Cinco Ranch High School is celebrating one of its senior students after he won a gold medal in the UIL state filmmakers contest. According to a press release from Katy ISD, Colten Boyles’ standout short film titled “Decaf” held the line against hundreds of the best student films from across Texas, withstanding multiple rounds of the competition as it captured the attention of judges for both its creativity and technical production and post-production editing. “For a student to produce a film of this caliber demands a steady commitment, a professional level of creativity, and a willingness to work collaboratively with others for a final product,” said Mike Marrie, Cinco Ranch video production and animation instructor. “The most attractive feature of Colten’s film is that it keeps the audience engaged and intrigued by providing what all superior films do: building appealing characters and telling a great story.”AdAccording to the release, the film depicts “a self-proclaimed detective get(ting) his only joy in life, a cup of Joe, stolen from him. He sets out on a hunt for the one responsible to then exact revenge.”Watch the full film below.

The UIL and TAPPS basketball seasons wrapped up its respective seasons last week through the weekend. Duncanville (boys), Argyle (boys), DeSoto (girls), Dallas Bishop Lynch (girls) and Fort Worth Southwest Christian (girls) all were crowned state champions over the last week. Like I did for the football season, I'm going to offer up some top-of-mind, knee-jerk predictions for the 2021-22 season - so here we go. With her continued growth and another stacked team coming back in 2021-22, Lake Dallas will be a team to be feared in 5A. The 2021-22 tournament season is going to be crazy and a welcome return to normalcy.

Dating back to the last UIL state tournament, it was the Ridge Point Panthers who represented the city of Houston in the last game of the season. The Panthers made school history in 2019 and have had some time to stew on that Class 6A title game loss. Vossos is flanked by Garrett Johnson at third base, while Brandon Nelson calls the pitches behind the plate. The Panthers will have to hold off the likes of Travis and Elkins in District 20-6A but should carry the banner for Fort Bend ISD. 2 ranked Duncanville forced 18 turnovers against Richardson on Tuesday night en route to a 68-49 UIL 6A State. Behind incredible defense from Damon Nicholas and Juan Reyna as well as an offense that refused to slow down, the Panthers forged their way to the UIL 6A Championship game. This will be the Panthers' fifth appearance in the State Title game where they will play No. Although the season was canceled last year before Duncanville could play their semifinal game in hopes of back-to-back titles, the Panthers have a history of excellence. They never lost a title game winning it all in 1991, 1999, 2007, and 2019.

State Week for both the UIL boys and girls basketball seasons. The final week of the UIL basketball season is here. Just two more days of tip-offs in the 2020-21 season with all of the State Semifinals taking place on Tuesday night all across the state and the State Championships taking place later in the week on Friday and Saturday. HOUSTON – Sports teams and venues in the Houston area seem to be taking a cautious approach after Texas Gov. Greg Abbott decided to lift capacity limits and the mask mandate starting next week.
