Harlingen High’s boys track & field team won the area meet. San Benito’s Jarrid Lopez qualified in the 100 and anchors the 400 relay team with Homer Quiroz, Fabian Garcia and Michael Benavides. Jazmine Thompson won the shot put and discus, and Lady Cards pole vaulter Emma Reyes won area by a foot. Joining Navarro at the regional meet is Mia Trevino, Kaya Dickerson, Kiera Castillo, Ashley Reath and Angelina Rodriguez as well as the 400 relay, 800 relay and 1,600 relay teams. Lyford’s 400 relay team hopes to be one to watch as it eyes state.

The Bulldogs broke through to their second straight Sweet 16 by defeating Corpus Christi Flour Bluff 42-38 on Tuesday in the regional quarterfinals. Senior and sophomore brothers Robert and Danny Canul scored 14 and 11 points apiece, respectively, to lead McHi. Danny Canul said the two developed the ability by battling against each other. Always trying to beat each other prepared us for these big moments.”The Bulldogs are prepared for another big moment — a regional semifinal test against Boerne-Champion. North Mission IDEA head coach Isai Cabrera arranged this season’s non-district schedule, loaded with matchups against state-ranked teams from various classifications, to prepare for the ultimate goal — a deep playoff run. In the UIL Class 2A Division 2 State Championship game, the Stratford Elks played with a mentality that was bigger than themselves after being told by Coach Matt Lovorn “If you’re not good enough without a title, you won’t be good enough with a title.” Stratford went on to defeat the Falls City Beavers by a score of 33-27 to secure a 2021 State Title! UIL releases cutoff numbers for 2022-24 realignment
The UIL released conference cutoff numbers and preliminary enrollment figures for the 2022-24 reclassification and realignment Wednesday, which will result in significant changes to the high school sports landscape in the Rio Grande Valley. The cutoff number for Class 5A is between 1,300-2,224, Class 4A is 545-1,299, Class 3A is 250-544, Class 2A is 105-249, and Class 1A is 104.9 and below. The football conference and division numbers are broken down even further with Class 5A-1A split into Division I and Division II. The most notable changes include Donna North, Edinburg Vela, Harlingen South, La Joya Juarez-Lincoln and PSJA North moving down from Class 6A to Class 5A for all sports. “It’s going to make the 5A districts even more tough,” said PSJA North head coach Marcus Kaufmann.

EDINBURG — Edinburg High returns 30 players from last season. Edinburg High then-head football coach J.J. Leija was placed on probation and later was reassigned. New head coach Rene Guzman, an Edinburg High alum, said they’ve talked about it because it’s part of the program’s history, but the Bobcats have put the past behind them and are focused on the future. He said he’s proud to follow in the footsteps of former Edinburg High coaches Richard Flores and Robert Vela. Edinburg High has 10 returning starters to work with — five on each side of the ball.

PSJA Southwest alum Diego Treviño won the UIL 2019 Class 5A State Championship in shot put. He’s currently preparing for his junior season in Norman, Oklahoma, with the Oklahoma Sooners track and field team. The recent rule change by the NCAA allowing athletes to profit off their name, image and likeness gave Treviño the idea to host the throwers’ camp. I want to help athletes in any way possible to succeed. The PSJA Southwest product recently wrapped up his sophomore season at OU competing in the shot put and weight throw events.

The UIL announced yesterday that they would allow webcast live-streaming to continue on Friday nights for the 2021 football season. This rule, however, does not apply to linear (TV) broadcasts which will not be permitted. This rule means for the 2nd year in a row UIL will allow live-streaming on Friday Nights.

HARLINGEN — Aaron Blount has received many accolades as a singer and actress. However, being named a top performer at the UIL state high school one-act play competition earlier this month is by far the most note-worthy. “Honestly it feels really, really crazy,” said Blount, 16, who earned the distinction for her performance as June Muldoon in the play “Anatomy of Gray” presented by Harlingen High School South. “Her father passed away at the beginning of the play and so she’s kind of questioning why God would allow that to happen,” she said. “I really feel at home on the stage during live performances and plays,” she said.

Four RGV tennis players punch ticket to state
Four Rio Grande Valley tennis players punched their tickets to the UIL Class 5A State Tennis Meet next month by earning top-two finishes at the Region IV-5A Meet on Wednesday at Northeast ISD Tennis Center in San Antonio. This time around, however, Salazar avenged the loss in straight sets to be crowned the Region IV-5A boys singles champion. McAllen Rowe’s Diana Park (32-2) advanced to the girls singles quarterfinals with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Donna High’s Hiromy Rodriguez. PSJA North’s Alondra Gonzalez (32-2) advanced to the girls singles quarterfinals by defeating San Antonio Health Career’s Sarah Byrd in two sets 6-4, 6-2. The new Fort Bend Austin volleyball coach also coaches for the Houston Stellars club team - which has already cancelled its summer season - but on Monday could start doing private lessons.
