New welcome center in First Ward gives nod to Houston’s local art scene

HOUSTON – Houston’s art scene is about to get bigger this year. Arts District Houston in Winter Street Studios will open their welcome center this Saturday at 1 p.m., bringing large-scale public art inside and out as a way to support local artists impacted by the coronavirus pandemic, a news release said. The new welcome center is roughly 230 square feet and will feature artwork from a local artist every month, and the grand opening will coincide with Sawyer Yards’ Second Saturday event, where visitors have the chance to meet hundreds of local artists during open studio hours, socially-distanced. Arts District Houston will also serve as a directory for visitors with suggestions of places to do in the area, the release said. Business hours are from Wednesday to Saturday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The last Sears in the Houston area is closing permanently

HOUSTON – The Houston area will no longer have a Sears location after this weekend. A KPRC 2 viewer pointed out the Sears location at Macroplaza Mall in Pasadena, formerly known as Pasadena Town Square, is set to close this Sunday, with yellow “store closing” signs posted all over. By the start of 2021, fewer than 100 Sears and KMart stores remain in the U.S., Forbes reported. The Pasadena store is still listed on the Sears website with hours listed from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday and Sunday and 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday. Only Sears Appliance Repair flagship stores remain in the Houston area, including ones on North Shepherd and Westheimer.

Eater Houston reported this is the third location for Katz’s in the Houston-area, which includes The Woodlands and Westheimer. The deli restaurant, which opened on Sept. 15, will also bring in a new look that sets apart from the other locations,Customers can expect the same New York-style deli sandwiches, Kosher hot dogs and other popular items at the new Heights location, according to Eater Houston. Katz in the Heights expects to roll out their “Katz’s Never Kloses” slogan and will transition to 24-hour service starting Tuesday. It is located on 2200 North Shepherd.

Sugar Land leads Texas in U.S. Census response rate: See the latest data

SUGAR LAND, Texas The City of Sugar Land in Fort Bend County is the top Texas city with the highest response rate, according to latest Census data. In a blog posted by the city Monday, Sugar Land has a 78.6% response rate for cities with populations over 100,000. The last Census response rate in 2010 was 85%, according to the city. In-person Census takers will visit unresponsive households, City of Sugar Land said in its blog. Katy ISD launches new Smart Restart website, highlights reopening plan for students and staff

KATY, Texas Katy ISD unveiled their 2020-2021 school year reopening plan on a separate website for parents and students. The website, called Smart Restart, highlights important links for students who wish to return to school in person, and those who want to return online. It also includes resources for parents like safety protocols at all campuses and FAQ pages. The district unveiled two methods of learning: on-campus and virtual, also known as the Katy Virtual Academy. Parents and students who want to enroll in Katy Virtual Academy may do it between July 20 and August 5.

Spring ISD graduates return to school to finish making prosthetics for pawless pup

Despite receiving their diplomas, two recent graduates from Spring ISD’s Carl Wunsche Sr. High School couldn’t leave their work unfinished. Engineering student Dawn Ford was responsible for building the prosthetic model, while veterinary science student Shianne Koch worked to make sure that any design would be comfortable and safe for Tootsie. The project came to an unexpected halt after spring break when the students were unable to return to school due to the coronavirus pandemic. According to Spring ISD, Tootsie’s right prosthetic requires some minor additional adjustment, but the left one fits well. At the fitting, the students took another set of measurements and said they intend to create the final prosthetics quickly.

A record number of HISD graduates received full scholarships to pursue certificates and associates degrees

A record number of 84 Houston Independent School District graduates have been awarded full scholarships from the Marvy Finger Family Foundation. The scholarships create the opportunity for each student to attend a two-year college to pursue Career and Technical Education (CTE) certificates or associates degrees. According HISD, scholarship recipients were required to pursue a career and technical program; on top of maintaining a minimum 2.0 GPA, being involved in school activities, and displaying a financial need. Additionally, the foundation also provides mentoring and food scholarships in partnership with the Houston Food Bank that provides 60 pounds of food twice a month while the students are in college. The financial assistance the foundation is able to offer these students is instrumental in helping them build rewarding careers.

Houston had the most dog attacks of postal workers in the country in 2019
