Houston NAACP honors TSU students from 1960 sit-in protest against segregation
HOUSTON โ On this day, more than 60 years ago a group of Texas Southern University sparked a movement that would lead to desegregation in our city within a year. On Thursday, members of the community honored this moment in history with a march and a new call for justice. On March 4, 1960, the brave students from Texas Southern University marched to the Weingartenโs grocery store, sat down at the counter and asked to be served. Many students took part in Thursdayโs march. Earlier this week, the House passed the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act, which would ban chokeholds and โno-knockโ warrants in drug cases at the federal level.
TSU professor considered the โfather of environmental justiceโ
KPRC 2โฒs ReโChelle Turner spoke to Dr. Robert Bullard, who is known as the โfather of environmental justiceโ. Dr. Robert Bullard is a distinguished professor of Urban Planning and Environmental Policy at TSU. His goal is to make sure everyone has the right to live, work and play in a clean environment. Dr. Bullard said the environmental justice movement also relates to the Black Lives Matter Movement and the death of Houston Native George Floyd. Dr. Bullard said just this month, TSU received a $1.25 million grant from the Houston Endowment to start the Robert D. Bullard Center for Environmental and Climate Justice.
Erroneous tweet causes confusion during soft launch of Third Ward vaccine clinic
HOUSTON โ An erroneous tweet caused confusion and long lines Tuesday during the soft launch of a vaccine clinic in Houstonโs Third Ward. According to Vanessa Astros, spokeswoman for St. Lukeโs Health, the appointment-only clinic is scheduled to be fully operational by Feb. 15. However, a soft launch was conducted Monday and Tuesday to ensure everything goes smoothly for the full-scale clinic. At least 200 people were in line as of 5 p.m. at Texas Southern University, where the clinic is being held. Only people who meet the current state guidelines to receive the vaccine will be eligible to get the shot at the clinic.
What to know about the Third Ward vaccine clinic being held by St Lukeโs Health at TSU
HOUSTON โ Baylor St. Lukeโs Medical Center is partnering with Texas Southern University to hold a coronavirus vaccine clinic located at the TSU campus in Houstonโs Third Ward. According to Vanessa Astros, spokeswoman for St. Lukeโs Health, the appointment-only clinic is expected to be fully operational by Monday. People who qualify to receive the vaccine under the current guidelines can join the St. Lukeโs waiting list at stlukeshealth.org. Those who sign up and are qualified to receive the vaccine will be contacted about making an appointment, Astros said. St. Lukeโs Health is not offering walk-in vaccinations at any location.

BAYTOWN, Texas โ Texas Rep. Al Green joined the NAACP Houston Branch and several of Houstonโs elected officials in convening a press conference to demand the racially, insensitively named โNegrohead Lakeโ be renamed โLake Henry Doyleโ Monday morning. The Baytown lake, which was formerly named โNi**er Lakeโ before it was changed in 1962, has caused officials to stand firm against its name that has caused much offense over the years. Officials are asking lawmakers to move swiftly in the renaming of the lake as a way to come against racism and social inequality. Officials said the lake is one of 33 landmarks in Texas with similar offensive names. He ended up going to TSU, where he studied at Thurgood Marshall School of Law, Bledsoe continued.

AdHistorian Dr. Merline Pitre documents how a lawsuit led the state to create TSUN, which was renamed to Texas Southern University on June 1, 1951. It was decided that the law school would join with the prospering Texas Southern University. Triumphant and determined, Texas Southern University has reached a peak of diversity and growth, having the largest enrollment as an HBCU. TSUโs Center for Justice Research creates action brief banning chokeholds
The schoolโs Center for Justice Research will release a report on Monday that will provide tools to local state and national legislators. It will ensure that they understand that there is evidence out there to begin banning chokeholds across the country. โAll around the country you find that over 70 percent of the countryโs largest cities have begun to put policies in place to ban chokeholds,โ Dr. Henderson said. Since May, Dr. Henderson and others across the country have been working to develop policies to eradicate the problem. Dr. Henderson says the next action brief will focus on the duty to intervene.
How city planners are building safer streets around TSU, UH
HOUSTON โ The Third Ward community near Texas Southern University and The University of Houston is covered in construction cones, but all for a good purpose. Intersections like Ennis and Cleburne are already starting to see improvements like wider sidewalks, which is a relief for walkers and bikers in the area. Last year, Harris County Precinct 1 Commissioner Rodney Ellis pledged to invest $30 million to reconstruct Cullen and other streets in the UH-TSU corridor. The project also includes drainage improvements to help reduce street flooding during heavy rain events as well as lighting and landscaping features. Ellis, Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner and University of Houston President Renu Khator broke ground on the $19 million second phase of the Cullen Boulevard construction project Thursday.

HOUSTON โ A former Texas Southern University law school assistant dean turned himself in to authorities Friday after he was previously charged with theft in an alleged admissions scheme, officials said. He was given a $10,000 bond, which he posted and was released. At the time, the school said the findings of their internal audit were turned over to local authorities. In February, TSU President Dr. Austin Lane was fired after the universityโs board of regents voted 6-1 in favor of his termination. A spokesperson for the DAโs office said Rene is expected to surrender in the coming days.

TSU announces full scholarship for George Floydโs daughter, Gianna
HOUSTON โ On the day Houston-native George Floyd was laid to rest, Texas Southern University sought to honor his memory by granting his daughter, Gianna with a full scholarship to study at the university. โThe Board (of Regents), in conjunction with the TSU Foundation Board, has approved a fund to provide a full scholarship to Floydโs beloved daughter, Gianna,โ the university announced in a press release. โTSUโs executive and academic staff will prepare a place for Miss Floyd if she wishes to attend the University." Albert H. Myres, the chairman of the TSU Board of Regents said that Floydโs legacy would be strengthened by the offer of an educational pathway for his daughter. โWe know the value of an education in the pursuit of solutions and generational progress,โ Smith said in the release.

TSU staff member tests positive for COVID-19, school announces
HOUSTON โ Texas Southern University has announced the first confirmed case within its university community, after learning one of its staff members has tested positive for COVID-19. According to TSU, the staff member is symptomatic and is currently hospitalized receiving treatment. According to TSU, those who are known to have come in contact with the staff member will be placed under a mandatory self-quarantine to be monitored for coronavirus symptoms. TSU is asking its faculty and staff to not report to campus without supervisor approval. Only essential business and educational operations will continue on the campus throughout this unprecedented situation, according to TSU.

HOUSTON โ A Texas Southern University regent who sided with ousted President Austin Lane resigned from his position on the schoolโs Board of Regents Monday, he confirmed to KPRC 2 in an email. By Monday night, Mitchellโs bio was already removed from the TSU Board of Regents webpage. In January, the Board of Regents voted to put Lane would be put on administrative leave with pay during an investigation. A month later, the Board of Regents voted 6-1 to fire Lane. Just 13 hours after the Board of Regentsโ controversial vote, TSU officials went into a closed-door mediation with Lane and came to an agreement.
'Witch huntโ: Fired TSU president talks about boardโs decision to terminate his contract
HOUSTON โ The former president of Texas Southern University on Thursday talked about the decision of the schoolโs board to fire him. At Thursdayโs news conference, Lane said he has already submitted an eight-page rebuttal to the boardโs four-page termination notice that he was given on Tuesday night. He accuses the board of robbing him of his right to a public hearing when he was placed on leave. They didnโt afford us that opportunity,โ Lane said. He said he believes the boardโs decision may have been motivated by the changes he has made.

Cooper-Dyke leaves TSU after leading the program to unprecedented heights during her first year at the helm of the program.
