Houston’s major health institutions forming study to determine how to prevent children from having ongoing seizures
To study the best way to administer the seizure medication, midazolam, so that fewer children arrive at emergency departments with an ongoing seizure: Baylor College of Medicine, Texas Children’s Hospital, the Houston Fire Department Emergency Services, Children’s Memorial Hermann Hospital, and UT Health are forming a study called PediDOSE to determine the best way to stop them.

Houston Texans, Texas Children’s Hospital select 4 local healthcare heroes to attend Super Bowl LV
HOUSTON – The Houston Texans and Texas Children’s Hospital announced that they have selected four local healthcare workers to attend the Super Bowl LV as their guest in Tampa Bay on Sunday. The healthcare heroes were selected based on their “unwavering commitment to their community throughout the coronavirus pandemic,” according to a release. The four workers, among other selected care workers who’ve been invited by NFL clubs, will participate in several Super Bowl LV activities at Raymond James Stadium. Those chosen to attend Super Bowl LV in celebration of their dedication include Kaitlin Hernandez, a respiratory therapist, Bhumi Patel, a registered nurse, Matthew Rivera, a registered nurse, and Dr. Matthew Pesek, a medical director for the pediatric intensive care unit at Texas Children’s Hospital West Campus. AdThe invitation will include a roundtrip flight on United Airlines, a two-night hotel accommodation, a Texans travel kit and Super Bowl LV Draft Experience, Gameday Tailgate and a ticket to the game.
Baby Nick to be laid to rest this week, per released funeral arrangements
HOUSTON – The funeral for 10-month-old baby Nick Torres has been set for this upcoming week, according to the Facebook page. A memorial service will be held Wednesday at the Compean Funeral Home at 2102 Broadway Street in Houston. Following the memorial, the child will be laid to rest at the Forest Park Lawndale Cemetery in southeast Houston. The hospital pushed to take the child off life support after they ruled the child brain dead on September 30. However, the family filed several appeals to keep the child on life support because his heart was still beating.
Baby Nick dies at home hours after being released from Texas Children’s Hospital
HOUSTON – After a long legal battle to keep him on life support, 10-month-old Nick Torres died at home Tuesday after being released from the hospital to his family. Dr. Joseph Varon, of United Memorial Medical Center, said he helped transport Nick from the hospital to his home, where he died a couple of hours later. He said it was a very emotional moment for not only Nick’s family but the medical staff who were attending to him. After several appeals to the courts, judges ruled that the hospital could remove Nick from life support. Over the weekend, the family’s attorney said that the hospital had agreed to release Nick into the family’s care.

HOUSTON – Baby Nick is going home to his parents. Last week, 10-month-old Nick Torres was scheduled to be taken off life support by Texas Children’s Hospital. His family has pleaded with the hospital and the courts to keep the child on life support, saying that his heart was still beating. Last night, Texas Children’s authorized to release Baby Nick to his parents. It is not clear when Baby Nick will be leaving the hospital.
Appeals court rules in favor of Baby Nick’s family to keep him on life support longer
HOUSTON – An appeals court ruled Monday in favor of Baby Nick Torres' family, allowing the family to keep him on life support for longer. Baby Nick was rushed to the hospital on September 24 after he was found unresponsive in a bathtub. A judge gave Nick’s parents and lawyer, Kevin Acevedo, until 6 p.m. Monday for the court of appeals to review the case and the motion. At 3 p.m. Monday, Acevedo held a press conference and said after they filed emergency appeals, they had not yet heard from the appeals court. Texas Children Hospital notifies patients of data security incident
HOUSTON – Texas Children’s Hospital is notifying its patients of a data security incident involving one of its vendors, the hospital announced in a release Monday. Blackbaud said it has no reason to believe the attackers have another copy of the hospital’s database or released the data publicly. As soon as Texas Children’s Hospital was notified, they mailed its patients who were affected by the security incident. Texas Children’s investigation determined that certain free text fields in the database may have contained certain patients' names, dates of birth, department(s) of service, treating physician, and/or limited clinical information. Importantly, no patients' Social Security Numbers or financial records were involved in this incident," according to a release by the hospital.

KATY, Texas Texas Children's Hospital said they are committed to providing additional capacity through ICU and acute care beds to take on both pediatric and adult patients. Back then, Texas Childrens said with jet travel across the globe so common, any illness that exists in Africa, Asia or anywhere can be in Houston within a day. Five years later, that statement is more accurate than ever and their Special Isolation Unit has been expanded to have an area for adults with COVID-19. At the time it was built, it was the first pediatric SIU or Biocontainment Unit in the country. What sets this unit apart is that it is specifically designed to care for individuals with highly-contagious diseases, such as COVID-19.
Texas Children’s Hospital employees to receive $500 stipend amid coronavirus pandemic
HOUSTON – Texas Children’s Hospital is giving all employees separate checks this Friday with a special stipend of $500 for those working full-time and $250 for those working part-time, president and CEO Mark A. Wallace announced. Wallace said he wants to honor the “dedication and commitment” of employees for the professional and personal sacrifices they have made while working to take care of patients amid the COVID-19 pandemic. The next few days, weeks, and months will be critical, and we are going to face some incredible challenges. As such, all employees will receive a separate check this Friday with a special stipend of $500 for those working full-time, and $250 for those working part-time.
