Feds: Texan tried to return from Mexico with 71,500-plus pills
BROWNSVILLE โ A traveler from Magnolia, Texas, was stopped at the border while trying to return from Mexico with a lot of pills this weekend, federal authorities announced Tuesday. โThis seizure of undeclared prescription medication was composed of sedatives and other medications that are classified as controlled substances by the Drug Enforcement Administration,โ said Port Director Tater Ortiz, Brownsville Port of Entry. While in the secondary inspection area, with the aid of a canine unit and a non-intrusive inspection system, CBP officers discovered pills hidden within the vehicle. CBP officers removed the prescription medication, which contained a total of 71,590 pills, including 58,038 Xanax pills. Authorities seized the undeclared medication and the vehicle, arrested the traveler and turned him over to the custody of Cameron County Sheriffโs Department for further investigation.

The Texas Department of Public Safety on Wednesday added two new fugitives to its Texas 10 Most Wanted lists. Gang member Joshua David Whitworth, of Magnolia, was added to the Texas 10 Most Wanted Fugitives List and sex offender John Oliver Talmadge McMickings, of El Paso, was added to the Texas 10 Most Wanted Sex Offenders List.

Montgomery County deputy shot in Magnolia, sheriffโs office says

A deputy was shot and injured Thursday in northeast Magnolia, according to the Montgomery County Sheriffโs Office. Officials said the deputies responded to calls of a man who fired shots at his neighbor just before 8 p.m. Thursday near Magnolia Hills Drive and Allyson Drive. One deputy was hit by pellets in the arm, leg and head, but he is expected to make a full recovery, officials said. As for the suspected shooter, the sheriffโs office said he is not in jail following an hours-long standoff.
Magnolia ISD will lift mask mandate on April 1
HOUSTON โ Three Houston area school boards โ in Friendswood, Magnolia and Tarkington โ planned to vote Monday night on whether or not to remove their mask mandates. New state guidelines require all students, teachers, staff and visitors to wear masks on school property, unless school boards vote otherwise. In Magnolia, the board of trustees voted to remove the mask mandate, effective April 1. AdIn Tarkington ISD, a decision has not been made as of Monday evening. We will update this story as the school boards cast their votes.

Man accused of killing his roommate in Magnolia, deputies say
HOUSTON โ A man is accused of killing his roommate in Magnolia, according to the Montgomery County Sheriffโs Office. Deputies arrested and charged the 28-year old suspect, Brian Guerrero, with murder. On Saturday, deputies responded to a welfare check on the 29800 block of Indiana Ave. A man told deputies that his male friend confessed that he had killed his roommate. The violent crimes unit responded and discovered the victim, a 28-year-old white male, deceased in a bedroom, according to deputies. Along with Montgomery County District Attorneyโs Office, detectives obtained a warrant for Guerreroโs arrest and placed him under custody for murder.

Boy found unresponsive in hot tub in Montgomery County dies, deputies say
STAGECOACH, Texas โ A 1-year-old boy who was found unresponsive in a hot tub at a home near Stagecoach on Monday has died. The incident was reported about 12:50 p.m. near the intersection of Beth Marie and High Chaparral. According to the Montgomery County Precinct 5 Constableโs Office, a pool company worker found the child and called for help. A spokesman for the Montgomery County Sheriffโs Office said that while the ambulance was en route to the hospital, it was involved in a crash near the intersection of Kuykendahl Court and Kuykendahl Road. Detectives said after consulting with the Montgomery County District Attorneyโs Office and Child Protective Services, charges will not be filed in the drowning incident.
SH-249 Expansion: A faster route to get to Aggieland is on the way
HOUSTON โ A new section of the SH-249 project opened in early August in one of the fastest-growing counties in the nation. This new stretch of concrete is a very important piece of the SH-249 expansion project as it helps lead construction into the Todd Mission area, just west of Magnolia. Section 1a of the SH-249 project is 6.4 miles long, with two lanes traveling in each direction. โThe State Highway 249 expansion will be a great future new highway alternative route for Aggies traveling to and from Houston. Woman found dead inside burning Magnolia home
MAGNOLIA, Texas โ A woman was found dead Sunday inside a burning home in Magnolia. The fire was reported about 3:30 a.m. in the 16200 block of Barbara Lane in the Walnut Cove neighborhood. Firefighters arrived to find the single-story home engulfed in flames and the roof of the home collapsed. Crews found the woman who lived at the home dead about an hour into the effort to extinguish the blaze. The victimโs identity was not immediately released.

3 Magnolia ISD schools to undergo safety upgrades beginning in December
Magnolia West and Magnolia high schools will see the following changes to the entrances of both schools, according to Jason Bullock, Magnolia ISD assistant superintendent of administration. House Bill 3, the school finance reform bill passed in the 86th Texas Legislature, included a school safety allotment of about $9.72 per student, which resulted in roughly $125,000 for Magnolia ISD to use for school safety improvements, Bullock said. Bullock said work on the high schools is scheduled to begin during the districts holiday break, which begins Dec. 23, and be completed in January.

Homelessness has risen 54% across Montgomery County since 2017, according to a survey from the Coalition for the Homeless. Local nonprofit leaders said two of the reasons for this increase include job loss and inability to pay rent or mortgage as Montgomery County lacks affordable housing. This means out of the 3,938 people experiencing homelessness within the reports survey area, 1 in 12 homeless people were found in Montgomery County in January. Tomball Police Department Chief Billy Tidwell said the citys homeless population is so small that many are known by name. The coalition reports the number of homeless people is down 52% since 2011 across the Greater Houston area, but Montgomery County was not included in the survey until 2017.

TOMAGWA HealthCare Ministries will celebrate the reopening of its Magnolia clinic Aug. 9, nearly six months after the nonprofit announced temporarily shuttering its Magnolia location, CEO Timika Simmons said. However, TOMAGWA has plans to add pharmaceutical and dental services in the coming months. In the coming months, we will be expanding pharmacy and dental screenings. Eighty percent of our dental patients are from the Magnolia area.Dental screenings entail an exam, and then TOMAGWA creates a personalized treatment plan. TOMAGWA began seeing patients at its Magnolia location Aug. 1 and will be open two to three days each week.

The Texas Department of Transportation is constructing an overpass from north of FM 1488 to FM 1486 in Magnolia to provide a direct route over the Union Pacific Corp. railroad tracks. Lighting installation is holding TxDOT crews back from opening the overpass to the public, Magnolia City Administrator Paul Mendes said at a July 9 City Council meeting, and other items still need to be finished, TxDOT Public Information Officer Emily Black said. City officials in Magnolia began discussing the citys fiscal year 2019-20 budget at a July 6 budget workshop, indicating increases in general fund revenue and expenditures, pay increases for staff and funds for a new $14 million wastewater treatment plant, according to proposed budget information. The proposed FY 2019-20 budget shows $3.124 million in general fund revenue, which funds the citys daily operationsa 5.2% increase from FY 2018-19; however, expenditures increased 6.1% during that same time, totaling $3.123 million. The city still anticipates a surplusa $660 surplus, budget information shows. However, the city of Magnolia turned off its red-light camera June 2 after Gov. City Administrator Paul Mendes said there is enough money in the red-light camera fund to cover the personnel costs for the officers for one more year.
