Feds: Texan tried to return from Mexico with 71,500-plus pills

BROWNSVILLE — A traveler from Magnolia, Texas, was stopped at the border while trying to return from Mexico with a lot of pills this weekend, federal authorities announced Tuesday. “This seizure of undeclared prescription medication was composed of sedatives and other medications that are classified as controlled substances by the Drug Enforcement Administration,” said Port Director Tater Ortiz, Brownsville Port of Entry. While in the secondary inspection area, with the aid of a canine unit and a non-intrusive inspection system, CBP officers discovered pills hidden within the vehicle. CBP officers removed the prescription medication, which contained a total of 71,590 pills, including 58,038 Xanax pills. Authorities seized the undeclared medication and the vehicle, arrested the traveler and turned him over to the custody of Cameron County Sheriff’s Department for further investigation.

Magnolia ISD will lift mask mandate on April 1

HOUSTON – Three Houston area school boards – in Friendswood, Magnolia and Tarkington – planned to vote Monday night on whether or not to remove their mask mandates. New state guidelines require all students, teachers, staff and visitors to wear masks on school property, unless school boards vote otherwise. In Magnolia, the board of trustees voted to remove the mask mandate, effective April 1. AdIn Tarkington ISD, a decision has not been made as of Monday evening. We will update this story as the school boards cast their votes.

Man accused of killing his roommate in Magnolia, deputies say

HOUSTON – A man is accused of killing his roommate in Magnolia, according to the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office. Deputies arrested and charged the 28-year old suspect, Brian Guerrero, with murder. On Saturday, deputies responded to a welfare check on the 29800 block of Indiana Ave. A man told deputies that his male friend confessed that he had killed his roommate. The violent crimes unit responded and discovered the victim, a 28-year-old white male, deceased in a bedroom, according to deputies. Along with Montgomery County District Attorney’s Office, detectives obtained a warrant for Guerrero’s arrest and placed him under custody for murder.

Boy found unresponsive in hot tub in Montgomery County dies, deputies say

STAGECOACH, Texas – A 1-year-old boy who was found unresponsive in a hot tub at a home near Stagecoach on Monday has died. The incident was reported about 12:50 p.m. near the intersection of Beth Marie and High Chaparral. According to the Montgomery County Precinct 5 Constable’s Office, a pool company worker found the child and called for help. A spokesman for the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office said that while the ambulance was en route to the hospital, it was involved in a crash near the intersection of Kuykendahl Court and Kuykendahl Road. Detectives said after consulting with the Montgomery County District Attorney’s Office and Child Protective Services, charges will not be filed in the drowning incident.

HOUSTON – A new section of the SH-249 project opened in early August in one of the fastest-growing counties in the nation. This new stretch of concrete is a very important piece of the SH-249 expansion project as it helps lead construction into the Todd Mission area, just west of Magnolia. Woman found dead inside burning Magnolia home

MAGNOLIA, Texas – A woman was found dead Sunday inside a burning home in Magnolia. The fire was reported about 3:30 a.m. in the 16200 block of Barbara Lane in the Walnut Cove neighborhood. Firefighters arrived to find the single-story home engulfed in flames and the roof of the home collapsed. Crews found the woman who lived at the home dead about an hour into the effort to extinguish the blaze. The victim’s identity was not immediately released.

11-year-old child dies after golf cart crash in Magnolia, officials say

HOUSTON – An 11-year-old child died after suffering massive head trauma after a golf cart crash in Magnolia, according to Montgomery County officials. Units arrived on the scene after 6 p.m. Sunday and started CPR. The child was transported to Tomball Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. DPS is investigating the crash. Another teen was transported in stable condition.

Mississippi flag: Magnolia could replace old rebel symbol

The magnolia centered banner chosen Wednesday, Sept. 2, 2020 by the Mississippi State Flag Commission flies outside the Old State Capitol Museum in downtown Jackson, Miss. The commission decided Wednesday that leading to the November election, it will promote the magnolia flag by calling it the In God We Trust flag. Workers discover large explosive device near Magnolia, Montgomery County Fire Marshal’s Office says

HOUSTON – Montgomery County Fire Marshal’s Office announced Saturday that workers clearing land near Magnolia this week unearthed what appeared to be a large explosive device. The bomb squad responded and determined the device was an inert Mark 80 series aerial bomb. The bomb was recovered and the investigation continues into how it came to be in our area.

Authorities search for man wanted in connection with deadly Magnolia shooting

MAGNOLIA, Texas – The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office is investigating after they said a man was shot and killed in front of his daughter in Magnolia Wednesday night. Deputies said they are searching for 27-year-old Christopher Julian, who is accused of fatally shooting his friend, 29-year-old Samuel Schmitt. Deputies said he and the victim went to high school together and they believe he is still in the area. ‘Food’s Here’ app launched by Tomball resident partners with new restaurants for delivery service

HOUSTON – A locally owned and operated food delivery business is partnering with nearby restaurants to serve residents in Tomball, Magnolia and Brenham. “Food’s Here” is an app that was launched by Mitchell Bethea, a Tomball resident, in 2017. “I’ve probably signed at least 10 restaurants (this past week) because people are jumping on board (for) delivery,” Bethea told Community Impact. MAGNOLIA, Texas – Magnolia firefighters rescued an 84-year-old woman from her burning home Wednesday morning, officials say. Firefighters responded to reports that an elderly resident was trapped in her burning home in the 37200 block of Thistledown Lane. When paramedics, firefighters, and deputies arrived at the scene, a man told them he woke to find the home filling with smoke from a fire in the kitchen. Within a couple of minutes, they found her on the floor, unconscious and suffering from severe smoke inhalation, officials say. Although the victim suffered significant smoke inhalation injuries, she is expected to survive.

Local groups focus on helping Montgomery County homeless, population rises 54% since 2017

Homelessness has risen 54% across Montgomery County since 2017, according to a survey from the Coalition for the Homeless. Local nonprofit leaders said two of the reasons for this increase include job loss and inability to pay rent or mortgage as Montgomery County lacks affordable housing. This means out of the 3,938 people experiencing homelessness within the reports survey area, 1 in 12 homeless people were found in Montgomery County in January. Tomball Police Department Chief Billy Tidwell said the citys homeless population is so small that many are known by name. The coalition reports the number of homeless people is down 52% since 2011 across the Greater Houston area, but Montgomery County was not included in the survey until 2017.

The Texas Department of Transportation is constructing an overpass from north of FM 1488 to FM 1486 in Magnolia to provide a direct route over the Union Pacific Corp. railroad tracks. Lighting installation is holding TxDOT crews back from opening the overpass to the public, Magnolia City Administrator Paul Mendes said at a July 9 City Council meeting, and other items still need to be finished, TxDOT Public Information Officer Emily Black said. City of Magnolia prepares fiscal year 2019-20 budget

City officials in Magnolia began discussing the citys fiscal year 2019-20 budget at a July 6 budget workshop, indicating increases in general fund revenue and expenditures, pay increases for staff and funds for a new $14 million wastewater treatment plant, according to proposed budget information. The proposed FY 2019-20 budget shows $3.124 million in general fund revenue, which funds the citys daily operationsa 5.2% increase from FY 2018-19; however, expenditures increased 6.1% during that same time, totaling $3.123 million. The city still anticipates a surplusa $660 surplus, budget information shows. However, the city of Magnolia turned off its red-light camera June 2 after Gov. City Administrator Paul Mendes said there is enough money in the red-light camera fund to cover the personnel costs for the officers for one more year.

Red-light camera ban slated to affect Tomball, Magnolia city budgets

Red-light cameras in the cities of Tomball and Magnolia generated revenue allowing the cities to create additional safety programs and hire traffic safety officers, city officials said. Previously, traffic violations by red-light cameras warranted a civic penalty of up to $75, according to the Texas Transportation Code. Tomball effectsThe city of Tomball installed three red-light cameras in 2008: two at the eastbound and westbound lanes of FM 2920 and Business 249which were turned off June 2and a third at the northbound lane of Zion Road and Hwy.
