Houston Astros foundation donates $65,000 to help build playground honoring boy who died of brain eating amoeba
Josiah died Sept. 8, 2020, just days after encountering a deadly brain eating amoeba found in Lake Jacksonโs water supply. Thatโs how the vision for a blue, white and orange, Astros-themed playground came about. With the approval of their education foundation, the educators created an online fundraiser with the hopes of raising $65,000 for the playground. That was until Twila Carter, CEO of The Astros Foundation, walked into the elementary school with a giant check for $65,000. Mohrman said the school will continue to raise money on the online fundraiser to get a plaque and other add-ons for the playground.

Mom tackles man accused of peeking in daughterโs bedroom in Lake Jackson
A mom in Lake Jackson tackled a fleeing suspect, who is accused of looking into her teenage daughterโs bedroom window. โFirst instinct was just to make sure he didnโt go any further,โ said mom Phyllis Pena. Pena said she returned home from the store around 7 a.m. on Jan. 31 to find a man in her yard peeking into the window. Lake Jackson Police identified the man as Zane Hawkins, 19, who officers found nearby but he tried to get away. โItโs not very often that we have somebody that actually steps in, puts themself in harmโs way to assist in apprehending somebody,โ Welch said.
Brazoria County opens COVID-19 vaccine appointments at 4 clinic locations
ANGLETON, Texas โ The Brazoria County Health Department has opened coronavirus vaccine appointments at four clinic locations. The clinics are located at Angleton, Alvin, Lake Jackson and Pearland. Health officials said the Angleton and Alvin health clinics are still administering second dose vaccines but are now beginning to take appointments for those needing the first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine. Officials said people who are eligible to receive the vaccine under the current phases can make an appointment online by clicking here. Appointments are required to receive the vaccine.

HOUSTON โ The family of a Lake Jackson boy killed by a brain-eating amoeba in the water supply has filed a lawsuit. The city of Lake Jackson and the Brazosport Water Authority are being sued for more than $1M. Langley said a deadly brain-eating amoeba was able to grow in the cityโs water supply because tests discovered there wasnโt enough chlorine. โIf the water supply was tested and tested frequently this could have been detected and could have been prevented,โ he added. The Center for Disease Control was also called in to test the water supply.

The notice was lifted after the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality reported disinfectant residuals were above the stateโs required standards throughout the cityโs water system, city officials said. Residents are asked to continue to take precautions recommended by the Centers for Diseases Control and Prevention until ameba concerns have been resolved in the cityโs water system, officials said.

HOUSTON - Texas-based and beloved, the gas station chain Buc-ee's is expanding to another state: Georgia. The gas station company based in Lake Jackson, which touts itself for the "world's cleanest bathrooms," will break ground on its new location in Warner Robins, Georgia on Nov. 18. on the southeast corner of Interstate 75 and Russell Parkway. Buc-ee's said the Warner Robins location will provide about 200 permanent jobs. Buc-ee's has 37 stores in Texas. It also has stores in Alabama, and has plans to open in Florida and Georgia in 2021.
