cnbc.com8 of 10 Premier League matches this weekend streamed in US
NEW YORK โ NBC moved eight of this weekendโs 10 Premier League matches to its online streaming service Peacock behind a pay wall because it wanted to broadcast golf's U.S. Open and the Tour de France on its television networks. NBC took over Premier League U.S. broadcasts from Fox starting with the 2013-14 season and on typical weekends in recent seasons had two Saturday matches on NBCSN followed by a late game on NBC, and several Sunday matches on NBCSN. But there will be just two televised matches this weekend, Arsenal vs. West Ham on NBCSN at 3 p.m. EDT Saturday and Leicester vs. Burnley on NBCSN at 2 p.m. Sunday. The Premier League continues to play in empty grounds because of the novel coronavirus, and all September games are being televised live in Britain. It shifted them behind a pay wall to NBC Sports Gold for the 2017-18 season, and last year they cost $39.99 for a Premier League MatchDay Pass that gave access to 140 live matches or $64.99 for the Premier League Pass that included replays and additional programming.

Peacock: What you need to know about NBCUniversals new streaming service
Peacock, NBCUniversal's new streaming service, is ready to flaunt its colorful library of content and its attention-grabbing price point of $0. "Peacock Free" is the free, ad-supported option for any consumer regardless of cable provider. So "Peacock Premium" is a tad bit more expensive than Disney+ but it still costs less than WarnerMedia's new service, HBO Max, and Netflix. And it will have something that many streaming services don't: news and sports. As the last major streaming service to go to market, Peacock may have an issue grabbing consumers who have a limited amount of disposable income.
NBCUniversal's Peacock has a buffer against ad slowdown with launch partners here's why they signed up
NBCUniversalThe advertising market is taking a hard hit, but NBCUniversal's streaming service, Peacock, is entering the streaming space with a stable of heavy-hitting advertising partners. Reaching viewers who aren't watching TV anymoreConsumers are increasingly cutting the cord on their cable packages, moving from linear TV viewership to internet-based streaming services. Media companies seem well aware of the trend, and are jumping into buying ad-supported streaming services. "There certainly is still a lot of crossover of people who [go] between linear and streaming services. Of course, Covid-related cancellations of live programming like sports are hitting linear TV as well as Peacock, which will have both on-demand and live content.
cnbc.comAnalyst sees the 'best of times and the worst of times' for video streaming services
As Americans are hunkered down at home and consuming more content, one analyst says the current situation "bodes really well" for NBCUniversal's new video streaming service, Peacock. Comcast owns NBCUniversal. "And streaming services will pick up a lot of users." NBCUniversal also owns NBC Sports and NBC Olympics. NBC Olympics is the U.S. broadcast rights holder to all Summer and Winter Games through the year 2032.

cnbc.comThe Streaming Wars may be put on hold during quarantines as free content takes over
After all, streaming video usage would surely increase with everyone stuck at home with few other entertainment options. That's made me reconsider how many Americans are going to jump at spending any extra money on streaming services while they're stuck at home. Instead of cementing subscription streaming services into daily life habits, it's possible quarantines will actually showcase the value of free streaming particularly user-generated content. More people are spending watching video during quarantines, which, of course, is better for subscription streaming than the alternative. User-generated content is instant and fresh, documenting at-home life, while on-demand Hollywood shows will fill an escapism niche but may feel less immediate and more anachronistic as quarantines continue.
cnbc.comCoronavirus quarantines could be the perfect backdrop for HBO Max, Peacock and Quibi to join the streaming wars
Michael Brochstein | SOPA Images | LightRocket | Getty ImagesThe coronavirus outbreak may lead to the first U.S. recession in more than a decade, but it could be a bonanza for the companies competing in the streaming wars. It just so happens that several new streaming services NBCUniversal's Peacock, WarnerMedia's HBO Max and Quibi will be debuting between now and May. The newcomers will need strong word-of-mouthThe next three entrants to the streaming wars will be: Quibi, the short-form streaming service founded by longtime entertainment executive Jeffrey Katzenberg and run by former eBay and Hewlett Packard Enterprise CEO Meg Whitman, debuts April 6. HBO Max, from AT&T's WarnerMedia, is slated to debut in May. HBO Max will also include everything from HBO and will cost $14.99 per month the same price as HBO.
cnbc.comNetflix will soon show you a list of the top 10 movies and TV shows
Netflix often shows TV shows and movies that are popular, but it hasn't provided a top 10 list before. Netflix on Monday said it will soon start showing viewers the top 10 movies and top 10 TV shows that are available to stream. Here's how the feature works: You'll see one list that shows a combination of top TV shows and movies in the U.S., for example. But if you tap into movies or TV show sections, you'll see a top 10 list specific to those, too. "This new row complete with its own special design will enable you to see what is most popular on Netflix in your country," Netflix said.
cnbc.comComcast shares fall despite earnings beat
Comcast on Thursday reported fourth-quarter earnings that exceeded estimates for the top and bottom lines. The company also said it added 442,000 new high-speed internet customers, surpassing expectations for 378,000 net adds. Comcast said that big beat was its best for a fourth quarter in five years. Comcast CEO Brian Roberts announced the company is increasing its dividend by 10% to 92 cents per share on an annualized basis for 2020. After the earnings report, Roberts told CNBC's "Squawk Box" that Comcast has made a "pivot to a broadband-centric cable company."
cnbc.comCramer: 'I love the clarity of vision' from Netflix CEO Reed Hastings on A.I. and avoiding ads
CNBC's Jim Cramer said Wednesday that Netflix's earnings call fostered optimism about a company he once called "an open sore on the market." Shares of Netflix, which had climbed more than 2% in the premarket, turned lower at Wednesday's open on Wall Street. However, Cramer said the standout moments on the call came from CEO Reed Hastings, who discussed Netflix's data integration and avoiding ad money. Netflix uses customer analytics to predict what content users will like and pushes recommendations based on that, a move Cramer said was "genius." "Everyone thinks ad money is falling from trees, it's going to Facebook, it's going to Alphabet, it's going to Amazon," Cramer said, adding Netflix will benefit from not integrating ads.
cnbc.comNetflix shares rise slightly despite weak guidance, domestic subscriber miss
But neglecting the DVD business proved to be a mistake, and Netflix reversed course. Shares of Netflix fluctuated in after-hours trading on Tuesday after the company reported fourth-quarter results. The company beat on the top and bottom lines for the quarter, but gave disappointing guidance for the first quarter. That's compared to analyst expectations for earnings of $1.20 per share and $5.76 billion in revenue. Despite this, Netflix said it still hopes to "move slowly" toward being free cash flow positive in the future.
cnbc.comNBCUniversal revealed a critical number about Peacock that shows why media companies are walking slowly into streaming
Toward the end of NBCUniversal's two-hour long presentation of its Peacock streaming video service Thursday, the media and entertainment company dropped a revealing piece of information that rival companies haven't made available. That $6 to $7 is less than what the company generates today from selling its products to cable networks. For the nine months ended September 30, 2019, NBCUniversal cable networks made about $3.4 billion in adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization. NBCUniversal is predicting it will have between 30 and 35 million Peacock subscribers by 2024. These economics help explain why NBCUniversal plans to offer Peacock Premium for no additional charge to cable subscribers.
cnbc.comNBCs Peacock bets viewers will watch ads to stream for free
Along with AT&T Inc.s HBO Max, NBCs new service, Peacock, is poised to be a relatively late entrant in the burgeoning market for streaming-video services. Comcast executives have said they plan to spend $2 billion over the next two years on the streaming service and expect it to break even by its fifth year. Their subscribers will have access to twice as many hours of content as those using the free version. Ad OptionsAnyone can get the free version of Peacock, but customers will have to pay $4.99 for the premium version with advertising. It also reflects the fact that Peacock is owned by Comcast, the largest U.S. cable-TV provider, which can use a free streaming service to make its other offerings more attractive.
chron.comNBCU's Peacock will have no more than five minutes of ads per hour, even on the free version
Comcast-owned NBCUniversal unveiled details of its new streaming service Peacock on Thursday afternoon, and it promises to be light on ads. Viewers will see fewer than five minutes of ads per hour on both the free version of Peacock and Peacock Premium, the latter of which is included with Comcast and Cox subscriptions but otherwise costs $4.99 per month. Hulu, which is majority-owned by Disney, told CNBC that it shows roughly nine minutes or less of commercials per hour on its $5.99 ad-supported subscription. Tubi, which is free, told CNBC it shows about four minutes of ads per hour. Traditional TV networks show an average of 11 minutes of commercials per hour, according to a December 2018 report by Pivotal Research.
cnbc.comNBCUniversal's Peacock ends phase one of the streaming era
Thursday's announcement will essentially close out phase one of the streaming era: product announcements and launch dates. Streaming services are theoretically future replacement products for pay TV an anachronistic bundle of linear TV networks that cost somewhere between $60 and $100 per month. There's strong evidence suggesting the general public has begun a movement away from traditional TV toward streaming. "When disruptive products enter a market, they typically are worse in some meaningful way relative to traditional products," Hindo said. At this juncture, the three new benefits for streaming services are lower price, new content and mobility, i.e., access to programming anywhere on any device.
cnbc.comThe streaming wars aim to kick off a new era in TV advertising
Michael Kassan, CEO of advertising advisory firm MediaLink, said as TV ratings decline with consumers shifting to streaming, there's increasing demand from brands to reach consumers on new streaming platforms. Peacock will be the biggest ad-supported streaming launch, as NBC looks for an opportunity to move away from the increasingly crowded subscription streaming space. Amazon is building an ad-supported streaming service in IMDb TV. "I would argue that if it's ad-supported streaming, it's TV in a different form, but it is still TV," Kassan said. Expect more content, viewers, and advertising to shift to the streaming space, Kassan said.
cnbc.comNBC's streaming service will have movies from Lionsgate after new deal with Starz
Comcast's NBCUniversal and Starz announced a new deal Monday to license streaming content from one another. CNBC reported last week that Peacock will integrate live offerings from NBC News Now, NBC's free streaming news service.

cnbc.comNBC's Peacock will try to differentiate itself from Netflix, Disney+ with live streaming element, tiered pricing structure
When streamers first log on to NBCUniversal's new streaming service Peacock, they may get something they won't see on Netflix, Disney+ or HBO Max live video. Users will be greeted by streaming content, similar to turning on traditional television, according to people familiar with the matter. Different versions of Peacock are still being beta-tested, as the service won't launch until April, the people said. NBCUniversal executives are trying to position Peacock as a valuable streaming service while not cannibalizing the traditional pay-TV business.
