'You little Asian girl': Racist attack leaves Houston beauty store owner with broken nose

An Asian beauty supply store owner in north Harris County was verbally and physically attacked by customers on March 17, per KPRC2's Andy Cerota. The attack came just a day after a gunman killed eight people at three massage parlors in Atlanta, Georgia, six of Asian descent. According to Cerota, store owner Jung Kim asked five customers, two of which were identified by Houston police as Keaundra Young and Daquiesha Williams, to leave her store after they knocked over several wig displays. โ€œWe never thought this would happen to us,โ€ he said, as reported by Cerota. He added that being referred to as "You little Asian girl" is something his mother will never forget.

'Debacle': Forensic investigator reveals his findings on the Harding Street raid

KPRC2HOUSTON - It has been more than six months since forensic investigator Michael Maloney first stepped inside 7815 Harding St.His mission? Hired by the families of Dennis Tuttle and Rhogena Nicholas, Maloney and his team recovered several rounds, months after the deadly botched raid. Maloney told KPRC 2 Investigates in May that, "This was surprising for a scene that was already processed." "I was very surprised when it ended up having a minor contributor of Dennis Tuttle," Maloney said. "I was also very pleased, because it allows us to then position Dennis Tuttle at some point during the dynamic shooting event."

Federal report finds ITC didn't have important alert system in place

These valves could have stopped an uncontrolled release, if for example, the pump or piping manifold were damaged. The reduction in tank level and volume that occurred as naphtha product released from Tank 80-8 did not trigger any alarms in the ITC control room. As a result, ITC personnel were unaware of the naphtha product release before the fire erupted. Going forward, the CSB plans to identify potential naphtha product release points and ignition sources, determine why the naphtha product release was not detected prior to ignition and why the release was not isolated post-fire. The backgroundThe ITC started on March 17 and spread throughout the facility, engulfing nine of the 15 tanks in the area.

Hearing for man serving 70-year prison sentence for murder has been reset to next year

HOUSTON - An evidentiary hearing for a man serving a 70-year prison sentence for murder has been reset to January 2020, KPRC2 Investigates has learned. The state also accused Burks' defense team of posturing because a key witness, Randy Lewis, was a no-show. Lewis testified before the grand jury that indicted Burks in 2000, but in a sworn statement KPRC2 Investigates reported Monday, Burks' legal team now argues Lewis has flipped. Lewis must be present for the evidentiary hearing. Prosecutors were prepared for the scheduled hearing today and were disappointed that it was reset at the request of Burks' counsel.

Harding Street victim's family: City blocking' investigation of deadly police shooting

Nicholas and her husband, Dennis Tuttle, were killed during the Jan. 28 raid at their Harding Street home. An investigation conducted by attorneys for the Nicholas family concluded that the shots that killed her were fired from outside the home. The City filed a plea on the basis that the probate court had no jurisdiction to consider a Rule 202. The plea was denied and the City filed an appeal, which stayed the probate court case. "The attorneys for the Estate of Rhogena Nicholas determined their course of action to obtain information in this matter, and the City has responded appropriately."

Here are five major highway roadwork projects that could add time to your weekend commute:1. A person in Texas has won the $227 million Mega Millions jackpot, lottery officials said Wednesday. The winning ticket was sold in Cedar Park, at the Lakeline Express Mart at 2004 N. Lakeline Blvd. "We look forward to meeting Texas' newest millionaire, and we are excited to have another Mega Millions jackpot winner here in Texas," said Gary Grief, executive director of the Texas Lottery. This is the 13th Mega Millions jackpot winner in Texas and the first since October 2016. The jackpot for the next Mega Millions drawing is set for Friday.

Huffman - Sofia OjedaWhat's happening: Several people in the area are still being rescued from their homes as water continues to rise. Quote of note: "The water receding in a lot of locations, but we still have high water," Harris County meteorologist Jeff Lindner said. Huffman residents forced to deal with another round of devastating flooding

KPRC2HUFFMAN, Texas - Residents in the Huffman neighborhood near Afton Way are dealing with multiple feet of water. Hoping for best"We moved everything we could upstairs, but you can't put your whole first floor upstairs," Cynthia Watson said. When Harvey hit in 2017, 4 1/2 feet of water came into Watson's home. One neighborhood in Huffman got flooded with 5-6 of water...other areas of the neighborhood got 15+ feet. "We're going to have to stay with family, and we're just going to do everything over again.

Clinical trial underway for drug that might help those living with PTSD

I wanted to drown myself out of my own thoughts.For years, Francis tried to mask the emotional pain with alcohol. The majority of people with PTSD suffer from insomnia, terrifying dreams and other sleep issues connected to their trauma. They're having lingering effects of the trauma they experienced, so they may have flashbacks, psychiatrist Dr. Olga Lapeyra said. "They may (also) have unwanted memories, anxiety (and) irritability associated with it.Lapeyra is part of a clinical trial underway in Miami, Austin and Dallas called the Recovery Study. In prior studies with PTSD, it was found that the subjects who did take TNX-102 S-L did have deep and restorative sleep, Lapeyra said.

'I was in total shock': Woman recalls being carjacked at gunpoint during deadly crime spree

HOUSTON - A woman who was carjacked at gunpoint in her own driveway during a violent crime spree Thursday night spoke exclusively to KPRC 2 a day after the incident. The carjacking victim was one of three people caught in the middle of the deadly crime spree in Houston's South Side. Houston Police Chief Art Acevedo said the crime spree started when a man was carjacked at a Valero gas station at 5820 Scott St. around 9:55 p.m. The woman said the men ordered her out of her vehicle at gunpoint and stole her phone. I was in total shock, beyond shocked, but I had to keep my cool to save my life," the woman said.

Residents sue CenterPoint, others for $50 million in regards to pipeline causing flooding

The lawsuit claims the improper installation of a pipeline in the Channelview area in 2015 led to flooding. The PMR law firm said the pipeline was installed to connect to the Keystone pipeline and its now diverting water into nearby neighborhoods, causing flooding, property damage and loss of property value. The law firm is representing dozens of homeowners in five neighborhoods. Now, new research suggests that even a small amount of lead in the blood can contribute to behavior problems in kids. Currie studied the blood lead levels of 120,000 children in Rhode Island, a state with high rates of lead testing for young children. Using school records, the researchers wanted to see if a child's blood lead level in the preschool years predicted whether they later had problems in school. "They're more likely to have disciplinary problems in school," Currie said to Ivanhoe. She also says there needs to be a more effective mechanism in place for blood lead screening.
