Houston nonprofit PetSet has launched Pet Protect, a free pet boarding initiative for survivors of domestic violence. The initiative aims to create an opportunity for individuals to flee dangerous environments safely without having to leave behind their pets. Since the stay-home, work-safe order was enacted, weve seen an increase in reports of domestic violence, Co-President of Houston PetSet Tama Lundquist said. Unfortunately, we know that oftentimes an abuser will use a pet as leverage to keep their victim in the home. Acevedo said the suspect then drove to the pregnant womans current boyfriends home in the 7100 block of Hedgewood Drive and shot him twice. The pregnant woman and her baby did not survive the shooting, police said. There was a 10-minute standoff between Thomas and police before Thomas shot and killed himself inside the cab, Acevedo said.

Miller Outdoor Theatre cancels all events through the summer
As many look forward to the end of canceled events, Miller Outdoor Theatre has extended its closure. Miller Outdoor Theatre announced all performances through the end of July are canceled. Guests were expecting events to resume in June, as cancellations were originally announced to last through May. The decision was made with the safety of attendees, staff, and performing arts partners in mind, the announcement states. Miller Outdoor Theatre is working to reschedule performances for companies that can postpone to later dates.
Houston City Council meetings to be held virtually starting this week
The Houston Mayors Office announced city council meetings will be held virtually to reduce the spread of COVID-19. Greg Abbotts suspension of various provisions of the Open Meetings Act, city council meetings will be held using Microsoft Teams. According to the Mayors Office, public comment will be allowed via teleconference and will occur at the beginning of the meeting at 2 p.m.All speakers wanting to make a public comment must register by 5 p.m on Monday, May 18. To sign up to speak, Houstonians are directed to call the City Secretarys Office at (832) 393-1100. Meetings will be broadcasted on HTV, the City of Houstons municipal channel, and streamed on the Citys website and on Facebook.
Summer-like sizzle rolls on for another day
Afternoon temperatures should be in the mid to upper 80s this time of year but this week, 90s will rule. Wednesdays record high temperatures is 95 degrees and for the second day in a row we will be dealing with possible record breaking heat. Ragin Cajun Westchase restaurant permanently closing after 20 years
Ragin Cajun located in the Westchase District will serve its last guests on Sunday, May 17. After 20 years the restaurant located on Westheimer road is permanently closing. Through its last day of business, the restaurant will continue to offer its limited menu for takeout orders only. Spring ISD Early College Academy named a 2020 Best High School by U.S. News & World Report
Spring ISD Early College Academy at Southridge has been named a 2020 Best High School, according to rankings published by U.S. News & World Report. Early College Academy ranks 305th nationwide and is considered one of the top 50 high schools in Texas, and ranks 14th in the Houston region. According to Spring ISD, this is the schools fifth year making the Best High Schools list since opening in 2011. Spring ISD Early College Academy at Southridge has been named a 2020 Best High School, according to rankings published by U.S. News & World Report. At Early College Academy the total minority enrollment is 87%, and 60% of students are economically disadvantaged, the publication reports.
Lathan: All HISD graduations will be virtual; several education options being considered for next year
HISD Interim Superintendent Grenita Lathan provided updates on plans for this years graduation and what is being considered for the 2020-2021 school year. GraduationAll 45 HISD graduation ceremonies this year will be held virtually on June 14, Lathan said. Summer schoolLathan said summer school will be held virtually this year, starting June 8. She also encouraged parents and students to take advantage of summer enrichment programs that will be available this year. Lathan said officials are still trying to determine how things like attendance and academic performance will be tracked if virtual classrooms are necessary next year.

HOUSTON As Harvey dumps heavy rain across Southeast Texas, you can track the bayou levels and rainfall totals for the Houston area. Rising creeks and bayous are a concern for many residents, and you can check bayou levels at the Harris County Flood Warning System website at www.harriscountyfws.org. A yellow triangle with an exclamation point means the bayou is nearing being out of bank. And a red circle with an exclamation point means the bayou is over the top of its bank. The site also has rainfall totals for Harris County.
