HOUSTON – For the first time in several years, Houston will no longer serve as the home of one of the nation’s premier celebrations of Historically Black Colleges and Universities.

Organizers announced this week that the Pepsi National Battle of the Bands is relocating from Houston to the Dallas-Fort Worth area beginning in 2027, with the annual event set to take place during the weekend of Aug. 27 at AT&T Stadium in Arlington.

The event had been held at NRG Stadium in Houston, drawing thousands of fans, alumni, students and marching band enthusiasts from across the country to celebrate HBCU culture through music, scholarship and community events.

What the move means for Houston

The relocation marks the end of a significant cultural and economic event for Houston.

The National Battle of the Bands has become one of the city’s signature HBCU events, featuring performances from some of the nation’s top marching bands, including Houston-area schools such as Texas Southern University and Prairie View A&M University.

According to the Harris County-Houston Sports Authority, the event has:

  • Generated an estimated $20 million economic impact for Houston and Harris County.
  • Attracted more than 55,000 attendees during previous event weekends.
  • Brought thousands of band members, alumni and visitors to the city while awarding scholarships to participating HBCUs.

Beyond the economic boost for hotels, restaurants and local businesses, the event also helped reinforce Houston’s reputation as a destination for major Black cultural events and HBCU celebrations.

Houston has long been home to one of the country’s largest HBCU alumni populations, along with Texas Southern University and nearby Prairie View A&M University, making it a natural fit for the annual showcase.

Why is it moving?

Organizers have not publicly detailed why the annual August event is leaving Houston.

However, the National Battle of the Bands has been expanding in recent years. In addition to announcing its move to North Texas in 2027, organizers launched a separate Palm Beaches edition in Florida and have continued growing the brand through documentaries and streaming partnerships.

While Houston is losing one of its marquee HBCU events, Texas will continue to host the competition.

Beginning in 2027, the Pepsi National Battle of the Bands will call AT&T Stadium in Arlington home, bringing the event closer to the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex while continuing its mission of celebrating HBCU excellence and raising scholarship funds for participating schools.
