HOUSTON – A massive pothole along Wirt Road had residents worried about safety and frustrated by what they described as a slow response to their concerns.
When 2 Helps You arrived at the 1700 block of Wirt Road last Friday, neighbor Lucio Ramirez pointed directly to the problem.
“There is the problem right there,” Ramirez said in Spanish.
The hazard was more than just a large pothole. The opening contained exposed rebar protruding from the roadway.
Residents who regularly travel through the area said the condition posed a danger to both drivers and pedestrians.
Another issue we identified was the significant traffic disruption caused by the damaged roadway. Drivers were forced to slow down — and in some cases stop completely — as vehicles merged into a single lane to avoid the hazard.
For Jose Rubio, the solution was simple: “They need to fix it.”
If you encounter a roadway issue like this in your neighborhood, city officials recommend contacting Houston 311 or your local City Council member. However, residents in this area said they felt their concerns were not being addressed quickly enough.
2 Helps You took those concerns directly to Houston City Hall.
The city responded, saying crews would fast-track the repair.
On Tuesday morning, we returned to the site and found a Houston Public Works crew pouring concrete and making a permanent fix.
It’s another example of neighbors speaking up, local government responding, and 2 Helps You helping connect the community with solutions.
