HOUSTON – A man is now charged after police say he attacked a woman inside a downtown Houston parking garage last week.

The attack happened around 9:10 a.m. at a parking garage in the 600 block of Travis Street, near Houston’s Theater District.

Investigators said the victim, a 28-year-old woman, had just arrived at the garage when she was approached by Stafford-Franklin, who police previously described as homeless.

Police said Stafford-Franklin allegedly choked the woman and physically assaulted her, causing her to lose consciousness during the attack.

After regaining consciousness, the woman fought back and escaped before alerting nearby security personnel. Dispatch audio indicated someone called 911 after hearing a woman screaming inside the parking garage.

An officer working a second job at the location began searching for the suspect after hearing the dispatch. Investigators said the suspect drove the woman’s vehicle to the second level of the garage before fleeing on foot.

The woman was taken to a local hospital with injuries that were not believed to be life-threatening.

Stafford-Franklin was later located and detained near the intersection of Main Street and McGowen Street before being arrested.

The case remains under investigation by HPD’s Major Assaults Division.
