HOUSTON – Harris County District Attorney Sean Teare is urging anyone who witnessed Tuesday’s fatal ICE shooting in east Houston to come forward as his office conducts a parallel review into the death of Lorenzo Salgado Araujo.

In a statement posted Wednesday on X, Teare said Salgado Araujo, who was shot and killed during an attempted arrest in Houston’s Magnolia Park neighborhood, “was a husband, a father, and a longtime member of our community.”
“When anyone in Harris County loses their life during an interaction with law enforcement, the Harris County District Attorney’s Office conducts an investigation parallel to the agency leading the investigation,” Teare wrote. “Unfortunately at this time, federal authorities continue exclusively handling all aspects in this case.”
He added, “Let me be clear: Mr. Salgado Araujo’s family and our community deserve the truth.”
Teare is asking anyone with photos, videos or eyewitness accounts from Tuesday’s shooting in the 6800 block of Canal Street to contact his office.
DA investigators visit shooting scene
On Wednesday, five investigators from the Harris County District Attorney’s Office were seen at the scene of the shooting, taking photographs and documenting evidence.
When asked about their presence, a spokesperson for the district attorney’s office said investigators are pursuing all available avenues despite federal authorities maintaining control over key evidence.
“Although access to key evidence remains under Federal control, we are pursuing investigative avenues available to us and will conduct a review of any information we collect within our reach,” the spokesperson said.
The district attorney’s office has said it routinely conducts parallel investigations into deaths involving law enforcement agencies operating in Harris County.
The federal investigation into the shooting is being led by the Department of Homeland Security Office of Inspector General. Separately, according to the FBI, their Houston Field Office is investigating the alleged “potential assault on a federal law enforcement officer.”
Family, attorney meet with district attorney
Attorney Domingo Garcia said he met with Teare alongside Salgado Araujo’s family to request an independent investigation into whether the use of deadly force was justified.
“We met with the Harris County DA to request an independent investigation of whether deadly force was necessary in his death,” Garcia said.
The family’s request comes as community leaders and civil rights organizations, including the Houston chapter of LULAC, continue calling for greater transparency surrounding the shooting.
Calls for transparency continue
The renewed activity by the district attorney’s office follows growing calls from Houston leaders for an independent review.
Houston officials have said the city has no authority to investigate the shooting because it involved federal agents rather than local law enforcement. City leaders have instead urged federal authorities to conduct a transparent investigation and publicly release their findings.
