The Houston Zooโs Chilean flamingo flock is expanding. This is the first time in six years the Zoo has successfully hatched flamingo eggs. The chicks have been named Astro and Orbit, in honor of Houstonโs major league baseball team. Guests can see the two new chicks, along with several other flamingos, actively nesting on exhibit behind the Flamingo Terrace, or online on the Zooโs Flamingo Cam.

Pack the tent: Overnight camping reopens at Texas State Parks
The Houston Zoo announced Tuesday that it would be reopening on June 3, and now people can also get back to enjoying the outdoors at Texas State Parks. According to a news release, the parks will now be allowing overnight camping for dates between June 1 and Sept. 7, and people can make reservations starting Wednesday. All visitors, including annual pass holders, must buy day passes and make overnight reservations ahead of time through the Texas State Parks Reservation System by going to the website or calling 512-389-8900. The continuation of overnight reservations and other park operations will be subject to change and are dependent on data, staffing and health recommendations. Visitors can stay updated by checking the TPWD website and Texas State Parks Alert Map regularly for the latest information.

Houston Zoo orangutan named Pumpkin dies of heart failure
HOUSTON - One of the Houston Zoos orangutans died Wednesday morning due to heart failure. The male Bornean orangutan called Pumpkin was 34 years old. While Pumpkin came to live at the Houston Zoo a little under three years ago, he endeared himself to our community very quickly and was much beloved by his keepers, volunteers and guests, the zoo wrote on its website. The zoo added that cardiac disease is a known problem for great apes, like orangutans, and the Houston Zoo has been working with the Great Ape Heart Project for many years to help study this matter.We are mourning the death of 34-year-old, Bornean orangutan Pumpkin.
