Crews have been working 24 hours a day to get the work done, covering Westheimer Road from the West Loop to Dairy Ashford. They started with repaving the area between the West Loop and Fountain View and continued working their way west until reaching Dairy Ashford. The Texas Department of Transportation tells me theyve finished all left-turn lanes on this major corridor except one.

A female pedestrian was struck and killed by a vehicle Sunday morning while trying to cross the West Loop after an Uber driver dropped her off of the wrong side of the freeway, according to authorities. Shortly after 3 a.m. Sunday, a female pedestrian attempted to cross the southbound lanes of 610 near Alabama Street when she was struck by a vehicle near the lane closest to the shoulder, HPD Commander Kevin Deese said. The vehicle driver recognized that they hit something but did not know what it was that they hit. An individual who had been with the women prior to the crash told investigators an Uber driver dropped the woman off on the wrong side of the freeway, Deese said. So, when units got here, he was on scene apparently trying to perform CPR, but it was unfortunately too late, Deese said.

BELLAIRE, Texas – A fatal crash involving a motorcyclist closed all main lanes on the West Loop at Evergreen Street Tuesday afternoon for several hours, police said. Bellaire police said a woman driving the motorcycle was northbound in the 7000 block of IH-610 when traffic stopped. Police said the female motorcyclist was unable to stop and crashed into the back of another vehicle, throwing her from the motorcycle. The woman was wearing a helmet during the crash. Around 5 p.m., all main lanes reopened.

A contractor doing demolition in an empty retail space said a fire broke out in the empty space. West Loop at U.S. 59/I-69For the second weekend in a row, the West Loop will be closed at the Southwest Freeway. West Loop traffic through Uptown will be snarled, but less so. Southbound traffic will be able to access the Southwest Freeway this weekend and all exits through Uptown will remain open. Alternate routes across the Southwest Freeway in this part of town include Chimney Rock, Rice Avenue, Newcastle and Weslayan. The connector ramps from the Eastex Freeway (U.S. 59/I-69) to I-10 eastbound will also be closed.

According to TxDOT officials, the 610 West loop southbound enterance ramp from Westheimer closed Friday at 9 p.m. The closure will be indefinite until further notice as crews continue their work to reconstruct the interchange between 610 and the Southwest Freeway. Drivers trying to access the West Loop southbound are advised to take the Southwest Freeway outbound to the Chimney Rock Road exit, make a U-turn onto IH 69 northbound frontage road, take the entrance onto 69 and then take the 610 southbound connector. TxDot officials also said the Hidalgo Street curve will be permanently closed. To access Hidalgo Street, drivers are advised to use the West Loop southbound exit ramp to Hidalgo Street and Richmond Avenue.

Question: Why was highway 59 changed to 69?Answer: The Texas Transportation Commission started designating parts of U.S. Highway 59 to Interstate 69 in the Houston area in 2012. About six months later, the commission agreed on renaming a 28.4-mile stretch from the West Loop south near Spur 529 in Rosenberg. In March 2015, it approved to close the 11-mile gap from the North Loop south to the West Loop. The Texas Transportation Commission finds that the designation will facilitate the flow of traffic, promote public safety and maintain continuity of the state highway system, said Danny Perez with the Texas Department of Transportation. I-69 is designated concurrent with U.S. 59; therefore, signs for U.S. 59 will remain in place, said Perez.
