Amid COVID-19 vaccine rollout, seniors start venturing out of their homes
BELLAIRE, Texas – One of the hardest-hit groups during the pandemic has been seniors. With the vaccine rollout, many of them who have been cooped up for the last year are venturing out. According to the Department of State Health Services, 25% of seniors in Texas have been fully vaccinated. Ad“This is somewhat of a celebration of being able to get out and do things, social things, after a year of being stuck home,” said Becky Hayes. “For my single friends, for my widowed friends, I think it’s been very difficult because they’re alone,” said Becky Hayes.

The Memorial girl's basketball team won their first round playoff game by defeating Bellaire 71-43 on Thursday night at Delmar Fieldhouse. The last time the Lady Mustangs won a playoff game the current players weren't even in elementary school. The Lady Mustangs hope to continue their winning ways through the next round of the playoffs as Memorial will face a familiar foe in Katy Tompkins. Teen found guilty of manslaughter in 2020 Bellaire HS shooting, police say
HOUSTON – A Bellaire High School student that killed another student on campus was found guilty of manslaughter, according to Bellaire Police Department Assistant Chief Onesimo Lopez. The unidentified suspect, who was 16 at the time, shot 19-year-old Cesar Cortes in the chest inside the JRTOC supply room on Jan. 14, 2020, according to officials. Cesar Cortes, 19, was fatally shot at Bellaire High School on January 14, 2020. At the time, investigators said the shooting was possibly unintentional but reckless and that the suspected gunman seems to show no remorse.

The Toasted Yolk to expand in the Houston-area with two new locations
HOUSTON – Two Houston-area cities will soon have a new spot to visit for breakfast, lunch, and boozy brunch cocktails. In a news release, The Toasted Yolk will be opening their 15th and 16th restaurants in League City and Bellaire after leases were signed for the two franchise locations. The Toasted Yolk in League City is located at 2535 Gulf Freeway near FM 646 and is set to open next month. The Bellaire location, at 5103 Bellaire Blvd is slated to open on March 2021.

BELLAIRE – In honor of Veteran’s Day, a Bellaire neighborhood came together to honor a US Navy veteran, who served in WWII and the Korean War. The surprise brought 96-year-old veteran Joe Wardell Sr. to tears. He’s the original Joe Wardell, and he served in World War II and the Korean War,” Joe Wardell Jr. said. Wardell Sr. joined the Navy as a young man, fighting in WWII and then again as a lieutenant in the Korean War. I feel comfortable with the degree of safety that was demonstrated in the first phase trial and Ive also followed the lead of Anthony Fauci who said that its reasonably safe for the third phase trial, said trial participant Patrick Yarbrough. Dr. Anthony Fauci said thats a good thing to have more options and could hopefully result in faster manufacturing.

Many Gulfton residents are struggling to make ends meet, but the community is looking at ways to curb this disparity. Bellaire police search for suspect after man pistol-whipped, robbed at ATM Sunday
BELLAIRE, Texas – Conrado Flores said he is thankful to be alive after a stop at the ATM in Bellaire earlier this week turned dangerous. He says he grabbed for the gun and there was a brief struggle with the suspect before the suspect pistol-whipped him. After he was finally able to break free and drive away, Flores says he then started following the suspect who was running away. If you have information about the suspect or the crime, you’re asked to make an anonymous tip to Crime Stoppers by calling 13-222-TIPS (8477). Crime Stoppers may pay up to $5,000 for information leading to the identification, charging and/or arrest of the suspect in this case.

If Tompkins can push a few more girls into the Top 30 spots, they could contend for a higher team finish. The team finished 13th overall at last year's state meet but do return some experience. Bellaire research firm calling for volunteers after being selected for COVID-19 vaccine trials
BELLAIRE, Texas A Bellaire research firm is in the race to find a COVID-19 vaccine after being selected to conduct clinical trials. Researchers say its now up to the public to sign up for the clinical trials so they can get a vaccine on the shelf. The Texas Center for Drug Development (TCDD) is asking for volunteers to come forward after the firm was selected for the COVID-19 vaccine trail. The program is a joint effort between TCDD and DM Clinical Research, which are two of the largest non-institutional clinical research networks in the Greater Houston area, according to a press release. Volunteers will not be injected with COVID-19 during the trials, per the doctors, but their medical and medical histories will be checked.

Texas History: A look back at what Bellaire looked like nearly 100 years ago
BELLAIRE, Texas – Located along Loop 610, you’ll find a 3.6 square mile city surrounded by Houston, West University Place and Southside Place. Known as the City of Bellaire, this suburb of Houston offers plenty of restaurants, coffee shops and parks for its population of nearly 17,000. In the early development of the city, Bellaire was targeted by Midwestern farmers as an agricultural trading center. Today, Bellaire continues to operate as a council-manger form of government and has successfully resisted annexation by Houston. Bellaire family throws surprise social distancing party for 95-year-old matriarch
HOUSTON – The coronavirus did not stop a Bellaire family from celebrating their matriarch on Monday, who turned 95 years old. On Monday, during the year of coronavirus she turned 95 years old. Maureen Tucker, Roslyn’s daughter, came up with the idea to celebrate the milestone with an outdoor party, a socially distant one. When Roslyn stepped outside Brookdale Senior Living Solutions in the Galleria, staff, family and friends greeted her with song. Tucker said the hope is to celebrate her mother’s 96th birthday next year without the coronavirus or social distancing.
Local school ready for learning outside of the classroom if coronavirus shuts down campus
BELLAIRE, Texas – If a coronavirus outbreak shuts down Episcopal High School in Bellaire, administrators and teachers say they have a plan in place to continue educating students from their homes. The school has been training staff on new computer programs, like Microsoft Teams. When the head of school Ned Smith first announced the virtual class contingency plan, students admit, they weren’t excited about the idea. Jay Berckley, dean of arts and innovation at Episcopal, said the coronavirus crisis forced quick action“This wasn’t something that any of us were thinking about three months ago,” Berckley said. He said he has been in contact with other independent schools and city and county school districts working together on best practices.
All northbound lanes reopen on West Loop at Evergreen Street after fatal motorcycle crash
BELLAIRE, Texas – A fatal crash involving a motorcyclist closed all main lanes on the West Loop at Evergreen Street Tuesday afternoon for several hours, police said. Bellaire police said a woman driving the motorcycle was northbound in the 7000 block of IH-610 when traffic stopped. Police said the female motorcyclist was unable to stop and crashed into the back of another vehicle, throwing her from the motorcycle. The woman was wearing a helmet during the crash. Around 5 p.m., all main lanes reopened.
Weekend road work: Here are 4 spots Houston drivers will want to avoid
West Loop at U.S. 59/I-69For the second weekend in a row, the West Loop will be closed at the Southwest Freeway. West Loop traffic through Uptown will be snarled, but less so. Southbound traffic will be able to access the Southwest Freeway this weekend and all exits through Uptown will remain open. Alternate routes across the Southwest Freeway in this part of town include Chimney Rock, Rice Avenue, Newcastle and Weslayan. The connector ramps from the Eastex Freeway (U.S. 59/I-69) to I-10 eastbound will also be closed.
Coronavirus rumor leads to loss of business for Chinatown supermarket
HOUSTON – The JUSGO Supermarket was open for business despite rumors that an employee at the store had come down with the novel coronavirus. It affects our supermarket, it affects Chinatown business and everybody gets scared," Chen said. KPRC 2 reached out to the Houston Health Department about the rumors. In this case, it seems to be the Chinese community,” said Scott Packard, a spokesman for the Houston Health Department. He said it was the health department’s standard procedure to avoid commenting on suspected cases because it leads to misinformation.
HISD looks at sweeping security changes following Bellaire shooting death
BELLAIRE, Texas – Houston Independent School District interim superintendent Grenita Lathan discussed several steps being taken to address security on the district’s campuses. Word of these measures came after Lathan and other HISD officials met with students at Bellaire High School. I’m a parent, my child attended this school,” Lathan said. While she declined to name the 20 campuses since the decision is not final, Lathan said HISD has already plotted out costs. Lathan said in addition to meeting with student leaders at Bellaire, she will meet with campus leaders at all 45 high schools.
Armed man robs drivers of luxury cars in Bellaire, attempts to steal vehicles but couldn’t start either of them
BELLAIRE, Texas – A man attempted to steal two luxury cars in Bellaire Wednesday night but was unsuccessful, the victims said. The video shows the armed man approaches the driver and demanded his wallet and keys. The second robbery attemptA few blocks away, the suspect attempted to steal a white BMW from another man, Oscar Aguilar, officials said. Aguilar said the suspect robbed him of his items and keys but couldn’t start the car. He said the gunman attempted to start the car for three minutes before he gave up and ran.
‘School security is the worst’: Mother of Bellaire HS shooting victim blasts school, district for lax security
BELLAIRE, Texas – The mother of the teen shot and killed at Bellaire High School last week spoke with Bellaire police detectives Monday. “The whole school district, school security is the worst. "The pistol believed to be the weapon used in last Tuesday’s shooting at Bellaire High School has been recovered and is in possession of the Bellaire Police Department,” Chief Byron Holloway stated. In a Friday statement, acting Superintendent Grenita Lathan said HISD was exploring measures to increase student safety. In the days since the fatal shooting, Bellaire High School has restricted entrances and instituted bag checks, among other updated security procedures.
Weapon believed to be connected to Bellaire High School shooting found, city says
HOUSTON – A weapon connected to a shooting at Bellaire High School last week that left one student dead, was found Monday, according to the City of Bellaire. “The weapon believed to be used in the Bellaire High School shooting that occurred last Tuesday has been found,” City of Bellaire Executive Assistant Raquel Porras wrote in a post on Nextdoor. After the shooting, the suspect was at large for about four hours before he was arrested. HOUSTON – A large number of people showed up Saturday afternoon to pay their respects and say goodbye to 19-year-old César Cortés. Cortés died Tuesday after being shot in the chest by a fellow student at Bellaire High School Tuesday, investigators said. Cortés’ funeral was at West University Baptist Church. The funeral services ended at 5 p.m when family members brought out Cortes’ casket and placed it into the hearse. While investigators have not released a motive for the shooting, Harris County District Attorney Kim Ogg said the shooting may have been unintentional.

Students are asking the board for more transparency, not only in this case but other recent gun-related incidents on campus. The alleged shooter, a 16-year-old Bellaire High School student, has been charged with manslaughter. Students gathered at Bellaire High School Friday afternoon for a vigil to remember and honor Cortes.

BELLAIRE – Classes resumed Thursday at Bellaire High School after a shooting killed a 19-year-old student, identified as Cesar Cortes. New safety guidelinesIn the wake of the shooting, school officials decided to implement some new, more stringent safety rules on the campus. Until further notice, all students will enter the building through a single-entry point, according to Bellaire High School Principal Michael McDonough. “These are initial precautions and more long-term, sustainable changes are being developed by the school safety and security committee,” McDonough said. Movements led by StudentsStudents Demand Action, a student-led group at Bellaire High School, are planning a demonstration and rally Friday at 3:30 p.m. at the HISD headquarters.

BELLAIRE, Texas – Family members identified the teenager shot and killed on Tuesday at Bellaire High School as 19-year-old Cesar Cortes. “He had no enemies, he was a good kid.”The Bellaire High School JROTC confirmed that Cortes was a member. “It’s a whirlwind for everybody.”Classes at Bellaire High School were canceled on Wednesday. Officials at the Houston Independent School District released the following statement:“HISD will cancel classes for students at Bellaire High School tomorrow, Wednesday, January 15. Bellaire High School students should report to school on Thursday, January 16.”HISD Superintendent Grenita Lanthan said the district will also provide counselors for students who were impacted by the shooting.

HOUSTON – There were four students in the room with Cesar Cortes and the accused gunman when the fatal shooting occurred at Bellaire High School Tuesday. The four students, all seniors, said the shooting happened inside the JROTC supply room in the JROTC building at Bellaire High School minutes before the 4 p.m. bell. JROTC uniforms, practice rifles and other equipment are kept in the supply room, the students said. One male witness said the accused gunman walked up to him and said: “I have something to show you. The students said the gunman walked Cesar to the door, opened the door, left Cesar on the railing of the ramp just outside the JROTC building and walked away.
Surveillance footage shows arrest of student charged in connection with Bellaire HS shooting
BELLAIRE, Texas – The student who is believed to have shot and killed another student at Bellaire High School on Tuesday was charged with manslaughter Wednesday morning. After making the arrest, authorities are seen looking in, around and under the dumpster.
