‘It’s not moving quick’: Nearly 800 people charged with murder or capital murder in Harris Co. jail are waiting for trial
A new legislation proposal hopes to address the backlog of court cases statewide by prioritizing murder and capital murder cases. If passed, the law would mandate judges to take up those cases first.
Well that was a record-smashing June...
As you know, we had ONE day in June where temperatures didn’t reach 90° thanks to the tropical disturbance just offshore--of course, that is officially at Bush/IAH. If you were west and north, you were plenty hot again yesterday. Here’s the month we just went through:
‘Hatred in the eyes’: How racist rage animated Jan. 6 riots
The Jan. 6 U.S. Capitol insurrection by pro-Trump supporters and right-wing group members shattered the sense of security that many had long felt at the Capitol as rioters forcefully delayed the certification of President Joe Biden’s election victory.
Sleep In Sunday! But Why?
My friends, Tim and Stephen, played it smart with Daylight Saving Time---they were in Puerto Vallarta last weekend and got an extra hour of sleep as Mexico went back one hour last Sunday. Now this weekend back home in Texas, they’ll get another extra hour of sleep! You may remember back in 2007 when President Bush changed the ‘change day’ to the first weekend in November rather than the last weekend in October---too much danger in the dark during Halloween for trick-or-treaters. Mexico stuck with the original so if you’re looking for extra hours of sleep consider that trick next time! But this is what we have for us this Sunday:
No 90s November!
I always call November the “no nineties” month which means finding cooler weather is easy as pumpkin pie. While we have seen the 90 degree mark across the area in this month, our official BUSH/IAH recording station has never reported higher than 89 in this month (seven times we’ve officially hit 89 and each time was a record high for the day). Generally, the first half of the month falls in the upper 70s with lower 70s the second half, while lows hover in the low 50s falling to the upper 40s. Here’s a handy, dandy chart I put together:
Defense, run game spur Broncos’ win streak
Winning the turnover battle and stronger production in the run game have Fort Bend Bush on a four-game winning streak after starting the season 0-3. More leaders and better buy-in from players have the Broncos already three wins better than they were last season.
Desert Hot Weekend!
I felt sure we’d make 100F over the weekend and we came close (Feels Like Temps were 103-105 and will be again today). For Saturday/Sunday Highs BUSH made 98/97, Hobby 97/96, Sugar Land 97/96--those were the hottest. Galveston came in at 90 both days with Wharton a cool 93 and 94. While we were sunny and hot, we were also sandy and hot. Just look at these dusty sunsets:

Foundations turn to bond market in response to rising need
In addition to the California Endowment, the Bush, Kellogg, Mellon, and Rockefeller foundations and the UJA-Federation of New York are recent entries into the bond market. Suzanne Shank, who sits on Skillman’s Board of Directors, co-founded Siebert Williams Shank, which served as a manager on several of the recent foundation bond offerings. AdThe foundations’ debt offerings came in the form of social bonds, which allow investors to try to improve society and shoot for market returns simultaneously. Advocates of the foundation bond offerings say the time is right. Unlike nonprofits, whose finances have been crushed during the pandemic, foundations have continued to enjoy strong investment returns for their endowments from the stock market.
Police tighten Congress security in era of rising threats
In this Saturday, Jan. 23, 2021 photo, riot fencing and razor wire reinforce the security zone on Capitol Hill in Washington. (AP Photo/Eileen Putman)WASHINGTON – The House’s chief law enforcement officer is tightening security for traveling lawmakers as Congress reassesses safety in an era when threats against members were surging even before Donald Trump’s supporters attacked the Capitol. Congress' 535 members travel frequently between their homes and the capital, and many have said they feel vulnerable in their districts and when they travel. The House members asked for tightened security procedures. President Joe Biden is in “close touch” with Pelosi about congressional security, White House press secretary Jen Psaki said.
Transition of power, throughout the years: Most cases peaceful, some awkward
When President Donald Trump lost November 2020′s election, it marked just the 11th time in U.S. history an incumbent president was beaten in a re-election bid. On the surface, it seems like it might be an awkward transition -- in which the current president vacates his office and is forced to witness the inauguration of his successor. In the middle of the night before the inauguration was scheduled to start, Adams departed Washington, D.C. and started his post-presidential life. 1828There was some bad blood between incumbent president John Quincy Adams and challenger Andrew Jackson, which stemmed from a controversial ending to the 1824 election that involved both men. 1932This was not a peaceful transition of power between outgoing president Herbert Hoover and the man who defeated him in the election, Franklin Delano Roosevelt.
Rights group asserts 'Hotel Rwanda' hero was forcibly taken
(Eric Draper/The White House via AP)JOHANNESBURG – Paul Rusesabagina sounded strained. “Paul briefly mentioned boarding a plane on the call, but this was strained and he cut off the discussion immediately after. The legal team points to publicly available flight records. But Rwandan authorities accuse him of supporting the armed wing of his opposition political platform, which has claimed responsibility for deadly attacks inside Rwanda. Rusesabagina’s legal team has filed a complaint with the United Nations special rapporteur on torture, and the office is “moving forward with their procedures,” Endless said.
Why I love living here: President and CEO of the Coalition for the Homeless on why he loves Houston
Michael Nichols is the President and CEO of the Coalition for the Homeless. This is an essay he wrote as part of our series Why I Love Living Here, a weekly feature where area residents share why they love living in Houston. When we decided to come to Houston, we left our large families and many friends in Atlanta. We also showed up in Houston at a time when tens of thousands of people were flooding into our job-rich region. Less than two years ago, I joined the Coalition for the Homeless as its interim CEO.
5 gift ideas for your aging father
With people living longer these days and more and more boomers hitting retirement age, the infamous Father's Day blue striped tie probably isn't the right gift for your still quite active father. Father's Day gifts should be consumables, which can be eaten, used, spent, sipped or enjoyed. Many public clubs offer gift certificates. With gas prices soaring this summer, a gift certificate for gasoline or an oil change tucked in a Father's Day card is a thoughtful, useful gift for the father who still takes a Sunday drive. BlackBerry, iPhone and Android all offer gift certificates for apps.
