Five Reasons Channelizing Buffalo Bayou is a Bad Idea

Basically, the currently lovely Buffalo Bayou, with its winding slough through tree-lined neighborhoods would become yet another drainage ditch and eyesore. Houston won't win any beauty contests with other major cities. Buffalo remains the free and wild slough that cuts a path directly through the heart of the city. Over the last 10 years, we have taken direct advantage of it by working with partners to develop Buffalo Bayou Park and continue to preserve Memorial Park and the Houston Arboretum. How did Houston bayous get their names? It's a tale older than Texas

Have you ever wondered how Houston's bayous got their names? Is there a secret buffalo shape hidden in the geography of Buffalo Bayou? Once Austin redrew the maps, he called the waterway "Buffalo Bayou" โ€” the name we all know it by today. Also: what we now know as White Oak Bayou used to be called the north fork of Buffalo Bayou until 1848. It's safe to say most Houston bayous, such as Greens, Hunters and Sims bayous, are likely named after white settlers.

Army Corps Needs a Do Over on the Buffalo Bayou Plan

The Army Corps of Engineers recently released plans for altering Buffalo Bayou as a means of decreasing flooding โ€” deadline for comment ends this week โ€” has certainly stirred up emotions among Houstonians and with good reason. The plan is an unmitigated disaster that would absolutely decimate the bayou and completely reshape one of the city's great urban treasures. LocalCommunityJournalismI Support Support the independent voice of Houston and help keep the future of Houston Press free. Preserve the beauty that comes with the urban wildlife Buffalo Bayou provides for future generations. What we have accomplished with Buffalo Bayou Park and the Bayou Greenways 2020 initiative that has connected Houston's miles and miles of green space shouldn't be shoved aside by some bureaucratic resource shuffling.

Canoe Chronicles: Knee Deep in Buffalo Bayou

It was a beautiful, if warm, late Saturday morning and I was standing knee deep in Buffalo Bayou. Go far enough and you get the Buffalo Bayou Park with magnificent views of the skyline. We understood that with rivers and streams you typically need an exit point downstream where you have to be ferried back to the start. I, only worried about this failure of an effort to traverse waters we had no business paddling against in the first place, was simply yelling, "PADDLE, PADDLE, PADDLE!" We emerged with a few battle scars, a good story and the knowledge that, like our canoe, we might bend a little but we won't break under pressure...or knee deep bayou water.
