The city of Weslaco with the help of Hidalgo County Judge Richard F. Cortez announced a gesture of gratitude to the veterans of the Rio Grande Valley on Tuesday, when new accommodations were granted at the Weslaco City Hall just days before Veterans Day. The token of appreciation came in the form of a new veteran-only parking space along with the unveiling of its respective sign at Weslaco City Hall’s parking lot. Weslaco was the first city in the Valley to accept the offer of assigning a veteran-only space at city hall, but other Hidalgo County municipalities have also agreed to do the same, according to Cortez. Wrapped in a black cloth and tied by a silver ribbon, the new “Veteran Only Parking” sign located outside city hall also acted as a gesture expressing gratitude on behalf of Hidalgo County and its residents. “We hope this small token of our appreciation is put to good use by all our veterans,” Cortez said.

BELLAIRE – In honor of Veteran’s Day, a Bellaire neighborhood came together to honor a US Navy veteran, who served in WWII and the Korean War. The surprise brought 96-year-old veteran Joe Wardell Sr. to tears. He’s the original Joe Wardell, and he served in World War II and the Korean War,” Joe Wardell Jr. said. Wardell Sr. joined the Navy as a young man, fighting in WWII and then again as a lieutenant in the Korean War. There are lots of cards.”Sure enough, at 4 p.m., Wardell Sr. exited the garage to see the crowds of neighbors cheering him on.

Graduates were handed a coin, commemorating Veterans' Court, a certificate and an American Flag. 'I feel like crying’: Houstonians flood veteran who felt forgotten with messages of love, gratitude
HOUSTON – Early Thursday morning, KPRC 2 introduced a 95-year-old WWII Veteran, Joe Rodriguez and his story. He served our country over 70 years ago and felt like no one remembered or care about his service. KPRC 2 Vincent Crivelli gave out Rodriguez’s phone number during an early morning broadcast in hopes that viewers could prove him wrong and responded in a big way. Thief targets several disabled veterans' trucks during Marine Corps Ball in Houston
HOUSTON – Sergeant Mike Nasche, a soldier in Houston on a recruiting assignment, is picking up the pieces after someone broke into his truck during the Marine Corps Ball this past weekend. “The back window was just completely smashed.”It happened in the parking lot of the Houston Marriott South near Hobby Airport Saturday evening. “All from veterans with disabled veterans license plates,” Nasche said. “There’s no on-duty security, there’s no rolling patrols in the parking lot,” Aguais said. METRO offers free rides to all veterans and active-duty military personnel Monday
HOUSTON - Veterans and active-duty military personnel get free METRORail, local buses, Park and Ride and METROLift services Monday in honor of Veterans Day, the agency announced in a bulletin. In addition to Monday's promotion, the agency is offering free unlimited rides to disabled or decorated veterans on the light rail, local bus and Park and Ride services. Lewie Shaw was awarded the diploma on Thursday during a Veterans Day ceremony at Claremore High School in Oklahoma. Shaw was orphaned at 12, dropped out of high school at 17 and worked as a school bus driver and a janitor before joining the Marines in 1943, the station reported. "One come out with a phosphorus grenade got me across the backside," he told KJRH.

Remembering, honoring Buffalo Soldiers on Veterans Day
HOUSTON – The Buffalo Soldiers Museum was founded as a non-profit organization 17 years ago. In 2008, they bought a building from the city of Houston and on Saturday, which is appropriately Veterans Day, they will finally realize their dream. Yes, it’s existed in this space for some time but now all floors of the building are fully renovated. All of this began as a retirement project for U.S. army veteran of the Vietnam War, Capt. I thank the Lord every day, every morning that I rise it give me the opportunity to put together an exhibit that demonstrates the heritage of the African American soldier,” said Matthews, founder of Buffalo Soldier Museum.
