DPS to increase law enforcement during Labor Day weekend
AUSTIN, Texas Whether youre just driving around town or traveling this Labor Day, the Texas Department of Public Safety encourages all drivers to practice safe driving habits and exercise caution throughout the holiday weekend. Beginning Friday through Monday, the Texas Highway Patrol will increase its enforcement on Texas roads. DPS reminds all travelers to be responsible and practice safe driving habits this Labor Day, said DPS Director Steven McCraw. DPS enforcement efforts also resulted in 489 DWI arrests, 358 fugitive arrests and 354 felony arrests. Drivers are encouraged to follow these safety tips during the Labor Day weekend:

AAA: Texas gas prices this Labor Day weekend are the cheapest in 16 years
HOUSTON Texans who take a road trip to celebrate Labor Day this weekend will enjoy some of the cheapest gas prices in more than a decade. According to AAA Texas, the statewide average price for a gallon of gas on Thursday morning was $1.91. Texas pump prices are setting up to be the cheapest for a gallon of regular unleaded on Labor Day since 2004, said Daniel Armbruster, of AAA Texas. Texas drivers are paying the second-lowest prices in the country for gasoline, according to AAA. AAA said San Antonio has the cheapest average price in the state at $1.81 per gallon, while Odessa has the highest at $2.13 per gallon.

Harris County orders schools closed until Sept. 8
Many other counties have also ordered schools to push back their start dates for in-person learning. A joint public health order from Harris County and city of Houston health officials states schools must remain closed until at least Sept. 8. But the order could be extended beyond that date, Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo said. Other Texas counties that will require online learning for the initial weeks of the school year include Travis County, Tarrant County, Dallas County and El Paso County. The Harris County order comes a week after Harris County officials recommended schools delay in-person teaching until at least October.
Telluride Film Festival canceled due to pandemic
NEW YORK The Telluride Film Festival, the annual film retreat held in the Colorado mountains and one of the fall movie season's top launching pads, has been canceled. Organizers said Tuesday that the festival's 47th edition, scheduled for Labor Day weekend, was scuttled entirely due to the coronavirus pandemic. Through much of the summer, Telluride had clung to hopes that cancellation wouldn't be necessary. Telluride is part of a late summer-early fall foursome of major festivals, along with the Venice Film Festival, the Toronto International Film Festival and the New York Film Festival. Recently, Telluride organizers were told that two of their usual venues at local schools couldnt be used this year.
