A federal judge has allowed a black Barbers Hill ISD student disciplined over his hair style to continue his case against the district, according to the student’s attorney.

Multiple arrests have been made in connection to a bank fraud investigation led by the Mont Belvieu Police Department.

Darryl George was kept out of his regular classes for most of the 2023-2024 school year at Barbers Hill High School. The school said his dreadlocks fell below his eyebrows and ear lobes and violated the district’s dress code. George spent that time out of his classes in in-school suspension or at an off-campus disciplinary program.

MONT BELVIEU, Texas – One of two boys at the center of a hair controversy at Barbers Hill ISD returned to school for the first time since a judge ruled the district’s dress code policy was discriminatory. Bradford, now a junior at Barbers Hill High School, is the cousin of now graduated Deandre Arnold. When we talked to him back in January, Deandre said he had always followed the school dress code, until they had recently changed it. They both enrolled in Sterling High School, where Deandre graduated. The cousins and their mothers filed a lawsuit alleging racial discrimination, naming Barbers Hill ISD and Barbers Hill High School administrators.

Nearly every parent with children in the district that KPRC 2 came across Thursday was in favor of sending kids back to school for in-person instruction with no delays. Many parents are comfortable with the in-person option but the issue is causing tension between the superintendent and the Chambers County Public Health Department. Classes are scheduled to begin August 19 with parents having the option of starting kids online or at home, per TEA guidelines. The health departments request for an in-person delay drew a fiery response in this letter from Barbers Hill Superintendent Dr. Greg Poole.

Arnold, who has since withdrawn from the Barbers Hill, said he was given two options: in-school suspension or alternative school. They deserve to see me walk across the stage.”DeGeneres and Keys hope the school changes their mind.

The issue is how long the hair of male students at Barbers Hill High School should be. They said that student Deandre Arnold is not the only one being targeted by the district’s dress code. Arnold is Barbers Hill senior who has been told his hair is not in compliance with the district’s dress code. His family said his dreadlocks are part of their Trinidadian culture, and he has been out of school since refusing to cut his hair to meet the district’s dress code. “He is absolutely permitted to come back to school,” said Barbers Hill ISD Superintendent Greg Poole.

Gary Monroe, with United Urban Alumni Association, spoke to board members on his opposition to the dress code. At Monday night’s meeting, Arnold’s family and several activists took to the podium to express their discontent with the district’s current dress code policy. This not about dress code, this is about policing black boys,” an activist said. DeAndre Arnold’s father, David Arnold, told the board the continuous punishment of his son is a form of bullying.

The father was driving the family boat, pulling his children on a large tube behind the boat. This is just truly a tragic accident," said Chambers County Sheriff Brian Hawthorne. This case is being investigated by the Texas Parks and Wildlife with assistance from the Chambers County Sheriff's Office.

Mont Belvieu police say Marie "Maggie" Margaret Henson was last seen at around 2 a.m. Wednesday in the 8900 block of SH 146 (intersection of SH 146 @ IH 10) in Mont Belvieu. She was last seen wearing a dark, long sleeve shirt with blue around the cuffs, gray fleece jacket, blue jeans and black Puma tennis shoes. She has been entered into the National Computer System as a missing person.
