HOUSTON, Texas โ An Alief ISD bus was involved in a crash on the feeder road of the Southwest Freeway Monday afternoon. Houston police responded to reports of an accident at 9201 Club Creek around 3:30 p.m.Officials say there were three students on board at the time of the accident, but no injuries were reported. The students were transferred to another bus and taken home.

ALIEF, Texas โ Monday marks the third day of the new semester in Alief Independent School District. Student engagementTeachers are laser-focused right now on finding the best ways to monitor their students to make sure each one is participating. Chambers said student engagement has never been more important, especially when it comes to measuring their success. Itโs that students are demonstrating that they are mastering the content that the teacher is teaching. One way we can measure whether they are mastering that or not is through their engagement,โ Chambers said.

Class is back in session: Alief ISD begins the school year with virtual learning Thursday
HOUSTON โ School is back in session today for Alief ISD Thursday morning. Things will look different this year for students and educators because instruction is 100% virtual for the time being. One was held at Alief Taylor High School and another is slated for Thursday at 8 a.m. at Elsik High School. Principal Mary Williams said although things will look different they are excited to get the school year started. โThe first day of school is always my favorite day of school and this is just a little bit different,โ said Williams.

Aldine ISDWith school around the corner, parents in the Aldine School Independent School District got some much-needed help Wednesday. Several volunteers and organizations teamed up to give away free food boxes and school supplies to families in need. Around 4,000 cars wrapped around the school waiting to get the supplies and a box of food from Baker Ripley.

The question: How does virtual learning work? The answer: The virtual learning experience may be different depending on which district your child is enrolled in. While districts consent in-person learning is the most effective learning environment, the spike of coronavirus in the Greater Houston area has many districts opting to begin the 2020-2021 school year with virtual learning. For example, Katy Independent School District is offering in-person learning and a virtual program, the Katy Virtual Academy. However, some districts, like Houston and Alief ISDs, are only offering virtual learning to start the fall.

Goose Creek ISD is the only other school district so far with a start date of Sept. 8 and students there will begin the year virtually for three weeks. Alief Learns option is available to all Alief ISD students in English and Spanish. Key Differences in Alief Learns and Alief Virtual SchoolAlief Learns courses are through Schoology. Students who would like a full-time virtual learning environment for the duration of the 2020-2021 school year can use Alief Virtual School instead. The decision to place the student into Alief Learns versus the Alief Virtual School will be determined by both the parent/guardian and the school administration.

Parents raised many concerns, including STARR testing being put back on the calendar for the upcoming school year. Katy Independent School District officials are working on a safety plan that will give parents the option of both online or in-person instruction. Alief Independent School District Superintendent HD Chambers says school officials have decided to begin the school year online. Chambers said he doesnโt want any student to lose out on their education because of the pandemic but the thought of how to bring students and teachers back to the classroom safely keeps him up at night. What resources and support will the school district give parents? Right now Alief school officials are working hard to figure out how to bring back students in the safest way possible. The school district sent out a survey to parents back in June.
3 people test positive for COVID-19 after Alief ISD graduations, district says
HOUSTON โ At least three people that attended Alief Independent School District graduations tested positive for coronavirus, the district confirmed Friday. One Hastings High School graduate and his guest, who attended the ceremony, tested positive Wednesday. The following day, a staff member, who worked the Taylor High School graduation ceremony, also tested positive for COVID-19. Alief ISD said they have notified all high school parents and staff members. If a staff member tests positive for COVID, the districtโs policy is that the employee quarantine for 14 days and may return to work once a negative test result is presented.

How area districts handle home learning amid presidentโs social distancing extension
HOUSTON โ Alief ISD is working hard to keep students on track, even while they are at home. Any students who are having a hard time with slow internet, or may not have good access to a computer received work packets to help them get their school work done. Many have also had to deal with no access to technology or slow internet. Teachers and school officials helped make the packets over Spring Break. Teachers will continue to work with parents on email and online tutorial videos, and phone calls now that โvirtual schoolingโ has officially begun.
Alief Hastings organize crawfish boil fundraiser to help recovering student
HOUSTON โ Alief Hastings High School administrators, teachers and students organized a crawfish boil fundraiser Saturday afternoon for a beloved student in need. โThe community has all come out,โ said Lynette Miller, a teacher and the organizer of the fundraiser. Velasquez is lucky to be alive after being hit by a cafeteria worker, who investigators said was driving recklessly and hit the student. โItโs been a tough journey no doubt. โIn Alief, Hastings...weโre all together and whatever happens, it affects all of us,โ said student Kimberly Hernandez.
