As the pandemic reached the U.S. and began ravaging nursing homes soon after most states with coronavirus outbreaks closed visitation at long-term care facilities. After the governor allowed businesses to gradually reopen in May and June, infections in nursing homes and assisted living facilities soared. At the end of July, the federal Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services started sending devices to nursing homes that can perform antigen tests on-the-spot within minutes; 372 have been allocated so far at Texas more than 1,200 nursing homes. But the new requirement to test all staff weekly could be a Catch-22 for nursing homes: those with no active case arent prioritized to receive those testing devices. For more than a month, Kay has made this trip hoping to find her unemployment check in the mail. The numbers of people calling the TWC and applying for unemployment benefits are staggering. On Tuesday, the latest figures show over 2.2 million Texans have now applied for unemployment through the agency. Just Monday, in one day, the TWC received 43,963 claims for unemployment through its online portal. As for Kay, she is just going to continue to call and monitor her online TWC account and hope she will see her unemployment claim approved soon.
Richmond mother pleads for better testing for essential workers after son tests for COVID-19
RICHMOND, Texas – A Richmond mother, who has been in a 14-day quarantine with her 22-year-old son says she is adamant that all essential workers should be tested for COVID-19. “Was very concerned about that and I said let’s get you tested before go you back to work,” Cotton said. Cotton’s son worked at a fast food drive-thru window just four days before his COVID-19 test came back positive. As a nurse practitioner, Cotton knew that as soon as he showed symptoms, he should not be at work and she took action. Cotton said that she went to three different healthcare providers attempting to get her son tested.
Mother upset with school’s handling of alleged inappropriate messages to 11-year-old daughter
HOUSTON – An upset mother said she is worried every day her daughter attends YES Prep North Central campus. She said she is frustrated with how the school handled the situation when a 19-year-old YES Prep male student contacted her 11-year-old daughter with inappropriate Instagram messages last week. In other messages, the male student asked if her daughter could send naked photos, the mother said. In a written statement Yes Prep said: “No parent should need to worry about the safety and wellness of their child. “When you tell me you’re going to take action and you’re going do something about it, I’m thinking he’s going be expelled from the school," she said.
Woman with Alzheimer's goes missing for nearly a week after being admitted to hospital
HOUSTON – A man says for nearly week he’s been distraught trying to find his mother, Bertha, who suffers from Alzheimer's. The hospital staff said that she had left the emergency room with an unknown woman on Sept. 5th. He said he’s been in contact with the hospital to try to get surveillance video, but he's worried about her safety. "It's a crazy violent world and people get hurt, but she doesn't know what's going on really because she has Alzheimer's. The hospital released the following statement:"We are required to maintain patient privacy but after the initial investigation.
