Claudio Fernández confirmed to Radio Diez that he'd lost his job at the Pinier funeral home, along with his son Ismael and Claudio Medina. BUENOS AIRES, Argentina – Diego Maradona, the Argentine soccer great who scored the “Hand of God” goal in 1986 and led his country to that year’s World Cup title before later struggling with cocaine use and obesity, has died. “Maradona inspires us,” said then-Argentina striker Carlos Tevez, explaining his country’s everyman fascination with Maradona at the 2006 World Cup in Germany. Maradona said he was given a soccer ball soon after he could run. A year after losing the 1990 World Cup final to West Germany, Maradona moved to Spanish club Sevilla, but his career was on the decline. He failed another doping test for stimulants and was thrown out of the 1994 World Cup in the United States.

(AP) – Diego Rubio scored in extra time and the Colorado Rapids beat the Houston Dynamo 2-1 on Sunday night. Colorado (8-6-4), which clinched a playoff berth with a 1-0 win over Portland on Wednesday, enters post-season play for the first time since 2016. Houston (4-9-9) ended the season without a win its last seven contests. Rubio took a pass from Cole Bassett, started his run down the left, planted and fired across his right for the game winner. Younes Namli put the Rapids up 1-0 at the 61st minute before Mauro Manotas evened the score for Houston eight minutes later.

FRISCO, Texas – Fabrice-Jean Picault scored twice in FC Dallas' 3-0 victory over the Houston Dynamo on Saturday. Franco Jara tapped in a sliding goal off a headed centering pass from Michael Barrios in the 19th minute to give Dallas (8-5-7) the lead. In the 27th minute, Fabrice-Jean Picault headed in a book pass from Andrés Ricaurte. Piicault added one more in the 93rd for the final margin. Houston (4-9-9), which beat Dallas 2-0 on Oct. 7, is winless in six matches.

(AP) – Niko Hansen’s goal in the 83rd minute helped rally the Houston Dynamo to a 2-2 tie with Minnesota United on Sunday night. The Dynamo's (4-7-8) Memo Rodríguez scored in the 59th minute, cutting the their deficit to 2-1. Minnesota United (6-5-6) failed to capitalize on a fast start that included two goals in a 19-minute span in the first half by Ethan Finley. Finley scored at 11 minutes on a well-timed run off a throw-in from midfield. At 30 minutes, Finley started a run and took a feed from Jacori Hayes past a defender, beating the keeper.

HOUSTON – Hany Mukhtar scored two of Nashville’s three first-half goals in a 3-1 victory over the Houston Dynamo on Wednesday night. Mukhtar opened the scoring in the 15th minute, and Abu Danladi scored on a header four minutes later. Mukhtar added another one in the 23rd, beating Dynamo goalkeeper Marko Maric on a free kick. Darwin Quintero, who leads Houston with six goals, scored in the 75th minute. Joe Willis made five saves for Nashville, which has allowed just nine goals in its last 11 games.

(AP) – Lewis Morgan scored on a penalty kick in the 57th minute, leading Inter Miami a 1-0 win over the Houston Dynamo on Saturday night. The shot was set up when Houston's Aljaz Struna committed a foul in the penalty area. Miami (5-10-2) won its second straight and moved within a point of Nashville for the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. (AP) – Kristie Mewis had a goal and three assists and the Houston Dash beat the North Carolina Courage 4-1 in the National Women’s Soccer League fall series Sunday night. After Lynn Williams scored for the Courage to avoid the shutout, Shae Groom scored the final Dash goal in the 83rd minute. The Dash (2-1-0), who hadn’t ever defeated the Courage, close the fall series next week against the Orlando Pride in Kissimmee, Florida. SAN DIEGO – San Diego Loyal forfeited a second-division soccer match in the United States in protest against an anti-gay slur apparently hurled at one of its players. When they came back out for the second half, Loyal’s players and coaches took a knee and then walked off, thereby forfeiting the match. “SD Loyal forfeited the match in support of Martin and the diversity that the club stands for within its community,” the club said. Loyal said in a statement that players and coaches heard the slur, but the match referees did nothing about it. Loyal forfeited its previous match -- a 1-1 draw against LA Galaxy II -- after player Elijah Martin was the victim of a racial slur by an opponent in the second half.

CHICAGO – Robert Beric scored for the third consecutive game and the Chicago Fire beat the Houston Dynamo 4-0 on Wednesday night. Jonathan Bornstein played a one-touch pass to Beric for a one-touch redirection from 7 yards in the 15th minute. Sapong converted from the spot in the 89th to cap the scoring after Aljaz Struna was called for a foul in the area. Sapong's first penalty kick was stopped but, after video review, goalkeeper Marko Maric was ruled to have come off his line and Sapong put away his second attempt. It was the Fire’s highest-scoring game of the season and just their fourth with more than one goal.

HOUSTON BBVA Stadium announced a limited number of fans will soon be able to attend Houston Dynamo, Dash home games, according to a press release. This reopening plan, which has been approved by the city of Houston, Major League Soccer and the National Womens Soccer League, marks the first time a major league sports stadium has reopened to some fans. The Dash is scheduled to play on Sept. 26 at BBVA Stadium against the Orlando Pride. BBVA Stadium is implementing policy changes and safety enhancements to protect fans, players and employees' health. The team also outlined that seating will be limited to the upper seating bowl at BBVA Stadium.

In a press release Monday, Friedkin, a Rice alumni, purchased the club for an estimated $700 million. Grigor Dimitrov, a three-time Grand Slam semifinalist from Bulgaria, said Sunday he tested positive for the virus. Borna Coric played Dimitrov on Saturday in Zadar and said Monday he has also tested positive for the virus. In a separate incident, Serbian soccer club Red Star Belgrade said five of its players had tested positive for the virus. The MLS announced Wednesday they will resume their season beginning July 8 with everything based in Orlando. Regular season points can be earned and the winner will earn a spot in the 2021 Concacaf League tournament. MLS officials are confident that medical protocols are in place for the duration as all 26 teams will converge on Orlando. MLS Commissioner Don Garber spoke with the media and says the plan is a good one. Once the tournament ends the MLS plan is for teams to continue playing in their home cities.

SPRING – A former president of the Klein Soccer Club has been indicted for stealing over $300,000 intended to fund soccer programs for children, according to the Harris County District Attorney’s Office. Investigators said that over a five-year period beginning in 2013, Brooks pocketed more than $300,000 in funds to the club made by parents or supporters. The nonprofit supports soccer programs for about 4,000 kids. Some club parents were just hearing about the grand jury action Wednesday. KPRC 2 attempted to contact Brooks for comment but didn’t find him at home Wednesday.

HOUSTON – Houston Texans defensive end J.J. Watt is making it official this off-season. During an interview on the Dan Patrick Show, Watt said tying the knot with former Houston Dash soccer player Kealia Ohai is one of the top things on his list while football is put on pause. “I’m good at speeches,” Patrick joked during the interview. I won’t even stay.”Watt popped the question at sunset by the sea in May 2019. He and Ohai have been dating for nearly three years.

HOUSTON – The Houston Dash have traded soccer star Kealia Ohai to Chicago. Ohai leaves Houston after six seasons with the Dash in which she made 114 appearances and started 108 times. “I want to thank the entire Houston organization and the wonderful fans for my last 6 years as a Dash player,” Ohai said. Naughton joins Houston after being a key part of Chicago’s backline throughout their 2019 NWSL season run. With this transaction, the Dash now have 19 players on their active roster ahead of the 2020 NWSL season.
