Purdue remained atop the AP Top 25 menโs college basketball poll for the third straight week while Gonzaga dropped to No. 24 after a loss to San Diego State but managed to keep alive its streak of 142 consecutive weeks in the poll.
Rice stuns No. 15 Marshall
HOUSTON โ Rice was the underdog heading into Saturdayโs road game against a 7-0 Marshall team. Not only because Marshall is ranked, but because Rice was without their starting quarterback Mike Collins and wide receiver Austin Trammel. But somehow, someway... Mike Bloomgren and the Owls stunned Marshall with a 20-0 win on the road. The Owls defense held Marshallโs offense to just 245 yards. According to the school, Rice shut out a ranked opponent for the first time since 1960.

Rice delays start of football season amid coronavirus concerns
HOUSTON โ Rice University football fans will have to wait a bit longer to see the Owls take to the gridiron after leaders decided Monday to push back the start of the season to Sept. 26. According to Rice Athletics Director Joe Karlgaard, the move is to allow school administrators more time to monitor the coronavirus pandemic at both the local and national level. The Owls were originally scheduled to start their season at the University of Houston on Sept. 3 and then face Army for the home opener on Sept. 12. Rice was also scheduled to play Louisiana State University on Sept. 19, but that game was canceled after the SEC voted to play only conference games this season. Karlgaard said he is also looking at the schedules of other fall sports such as volleyball and cross country.
Trey Murphy III on pace to become Rice basketball great
The Owls are led in scoring by sophomore Trey Murphy III, a recruit they pulled out of Durham, North Carolina and stuck immediately into the lineup. Murphy has been arguably Riceโs best player in just his second season and is on pace to set records for the Owls. A BASKETBALL FAMILYKenneth (Trey) Murphy III is the son of Kenneth Murphy, Jr., and the grandson of Kenneth Murphy. There was no specific growth spurt, but Murphy grew to be 6 feet 5 inches tall by the time Rice signed him. Murphy shot 42.1% as a freshman on far fewer attempts, and with far less attention.
UH, Rice, TSU, other Texas schools headed to NCAA baseball regionals
HOUSTON โ The NCAA baseball tournament field is set and there will be plenty of local flavor. The University of Houston, which won the AAC Tournament, will host a regional that will include Texas A&M, Baylor and Iowa. Rice University, which won the C-USA Tournament, is headed to the LSU regional as the third seed. The Owls will open with Southeast Louisiana while Texas Southern University plays LSU. The Texas Longhorns made the field and will play in the Long Beach Regional this weekend.
Rice baseball team defeats Marshall 5-1 Saturday afternoon on the road
On Saturday the Owls clinched the series with a quality start from Kubitza and a breakthrough inning in the fifth. Rice had runners reach scoring position in each of the next four innings, including bases-loaded situations in both the eighth and ninth innings. Marshall avoided the shutout with a run in the bottom of the ninth inning. Kubitza and the Rice staff was well-aware Marshall would continue to fight to the end. "We saw from (Reckling's) game Friday that Marshall would be aggressive at the plate and stay that way all game," Kubitza said.
Rice falls to Lamar 5-4
HOUSTON โ The Rice baseball team rallied for four runs over a span of four-straight innings, but Lamar regained the lead in the seventh and hung on for a 5-4 win over the Owls Wednesday night at Reckling Park in Houston. A Lamar error on the play, however, allowed Fuda an extra 90 feet to home plate and make it 4-3. Lamar held-off Rice's final at bats in the ninth for the 5-4 final. "Tonight's game was determined by our mental mistakes," said Rice head coach Wayne Graham. By design, a total of six Rice pitchers saw work in the game in advance of the team's upcoming Conference USA league opener.
