cnbc.comHas COVID-19 killed restaurants? Not by a long shot
In the last three months of 2020, the food-ordering platform added more than 18,000 new food businesses, on par with the previous year. In the first two months of the year, Americans filed applications for 50,000 new food businesses, Census data show — nearly double the 10-year average. Delivery-only food businesses, sometimes called "ghost kitchens," are seeing the largest growth. For those banking on the survival of their food business, the risk of failure is very real.

Justin Norman, vice president of data science at Yelp, sees optimism in the numbers. Of the almost half million new businesses that have opened, about 59% were within the "professional, local, home and auto" category on Yelp. "The number of new business openings — particularly the high number of new home, local, professional and auto services businesses — also shows great potential for those industries in the future," Norman said.

Yelp gives senators its list of grievances against Google in antitrust hearing
Yelp, one of Google's most enduring critics, got to share its grievances with senators on the Antitrust Subcommittee on Tuesday. Some of those non-Google results included Yelp, which Lowe said gets about 80% of its web traffic from Google. "We build Google Search for our users," a Google spokesperson said in an emailed statement. The Federal Trade Commission previously investigated Google's search engine, concluding in a 2013 statement that "Google's display of its own content could plausibly be viewed as an improvement in the overall quality of Google's search product. He claimed the "majority of traffic going to Google either terminates on Google or it goes to Google secondary pages."

chron.comWhy Charlie Munger's 'bulls--t earnings' metric is used by so many tech companies
In Uber's earnings report last week, the acronym EBITDA showed up 42 times. The term showed up 33 times in Lyft's report this week, while Yelp included it 39 times in its earnings release after the close of trading on Thursday. Berkshire Hathaway Vice Chairman Charlie Munger describes it another way: "bulls--- earnings." To get to EBITDA, companies take bottom-line net income (or loss), based on generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP), and then add back in items they had counted as costs but that don't affect their cash position. Some internet companies, in particular, take the further step of reporting adjusted EBITDA, providing a glimpse of their earnings if they didn't have to account for stock-based compensation.
