Houston NAACP honors TSU students from 1960 sit-in protest against segregation
HOUSTON โ On this day, more than 60 years ago a group of Texas Southern University sparked a movement that would lead to desegregation in our city within a year. On Thursday, members of the community honored this moment in history with a march and a new call for justice. On March 4, 1960, the brave students from Texas Southern University marched to the Weingartenโs grocery store, sat down at the counter and asked to be served. Many students took part in Thursdayโs march. Earlier this week, the House passed the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act, which would ban chokeholds and โno-knockโ warrants in drug cases at the federal level.
TSU professor considered the โfather of environmental justiceโ
KPRC 2โฒs ReโChelle Turner spoke to Dr. Robert Bullard, who is known as the โfather of environmental justiceโ. Dr. Robert Bullard is a distinguished professor of Urban Planning and Environmental Policy at TSU. His goal is to make sure everyone has the right to live, work and play in a clean environment. Dr. Bullard said the environmental justice movement also relates to the Black Lives Matter Movement and the death of Houston Native George Floyd. Dr. Bullard said just this month, TSU received a $1.25 million grant from the Houston Endowment to start the Robert D. Bullard Center for Environmental and Climate Justice.

Remembering a real-life Houston superhero: John Bland
On March 4, 1960, Texas Southern University alumnus John Bland helped organize Houstonโs first sit-in at the Weingartenโs grocery store lunch counter. The sit-in was nonviolent and consisted of more than a dozen TSU students. The students called themselves the Progressive Youth Association (PYA), and Bland was the secretary. I joined many students in the protest for George Floyd, walking in the footsteps of Bland and others for justice. An HBCU gives one student more than an education
In fact, her high school advisors encouraged her to favor predominantly white institutions (PWI) for the path to success. In that moment, her success looked unattainable until the yellow brick road led her to the famous TSU Tiger Walk. Like her Historically Black College and University (HBCU), Campbell overcame setbacks and sought success and is on the path to becoming a notable HBCU alumni. It wasnโt until the TSU Honors College reached out to her because of good grades that she set her eyes on the Houston HBCU. AdCampbell said that she will continue this path of HBCU greatness.
Erroneous tweet causes confusion during soft launch of Third Ward vaccine clinic
HOUSTON โ An erroneous tweet caused confusion and long lines Tuesday during the soft launch of a vaccine clinic in Houstonโs Third Ward. According to Vanessa Astros, spokeswoman for St. Lukeโs Health, the appointment-only clinic is scheduled to be fully operational by Feb. 15. However, a soft launch was conducted Monday and Tuesday to ensure everything goes smoothly for the full-scale clinic. At least 200 people were in line as of 5 p.m. at Texas Southern University, where the clinic is being held. Only people who meet the current state guidelines to receive the vaccine will be eligible to get the shot at the clinic.
What to know about the Third Ward vaccine clinic being held by St Lukeโs Health at TSU
HOUSTON โ Baylor St. Lukeโs Medical Center is partnering with Texas Southern University to hold a coronavirus vaccine clinic located at the TSU campus in Houstonโs Third Ward. According to Vanessa Astros, spokeswoman for St. Lukeโs Health, the appointment-only clinic is expected to be fully operational by Monday. People who qualify to receive the vaccine under the current guidelines can join the St. Lukeโs waiting list at stlukeshealth.org. Those who sign up and are qualified to receive the vaccine will be contacted about making an appointment, Astros said. St. Lukeโs Health is not offering walk-in vaccinations at any location.

The Texas Southern debate team is world renown. After the passing of its founding coach, Dr. Thomas F. Freeman, the torch has been passed to Dr. Gloria Batiste-Roberts. As the new head coach of the debate team, Batiste-Roberts has done nothing but lead the team to more victories and successes. Gloria is an amazing coach and mentor to myself and multiple current and former students,โ Nahab Fahnbulleh, debate team president said. Texas Southern University has a rich and fabled history
AdThe fabled story of Texas Southern University began in 1927 when Houstonโs Independent School District decided to establish two segregated junior colleges. AdHistorian Dr. Merline Pitre documents how a lawsuit led the state to create TSUN, which was renamed to Texas Southern University on June 1, 1951. It was decided that the law school would join with the prospering Texas Southern University. Triumphant and determined, Texas Southern University has reached a peak of diversity and growth, having the largest enrollment as an HBCU. On Thursday Sept 12, 2019, a @houstonpolice officer was shot by a suspect shortly after the end of the @DNC Presidential Debate @TexasSouthern. Acevedo said the officer, family and hospital staff were all lifted by Bidenโs visit. Acevedo said the officer, Taylor Roccaforte, shared two photos of Bidenโs visit on Sept. 15, 2019.
