Lauren Anderson is the first Black principal dancer of a major American ballet company and a household name in the arts community. Some may think they have her figured out, but many donโt know her real story. Although growing up to be a beautiful ballerina, she battled addiction. Her impactful story is now being told for the FIRST time in a world premiere play, right here in our neck of the woods at Stages, Houstonโs intimate, inclusive, and progressive theater.
Lauren Anderson: A Houstonian who blazed a trail for ballet dancers
Native Houstonian Lauren Anderson has flourished in one the most detailed artforms in the world -- professional ballet. Her persistence to excel resulted in a remarkable breakthrough in American ballet history. At the age of 18, she joined the Houston Ballet (the fourth-largest professional ballet company in the U.S.) as a ballerina in the Corps de Ballet, which means a group of dancers. The Houston Ballet received pushback for its decision to promote Anderson. However, in a photo that was taken during the Swan Lake performance, Anderson can be seen directly in the center of the formation.

HOUSTON โ The Edison Arts Foundation is excited to present Lauren Anderson for a Ballet Master Class Series! Anderson is one of the first African-American principal ballerinas for a major U.S. ballet company (Houston Ballet) and she has blazed a path for dancers of color. Classes will be held February13th, March 13th, April 17th, and May 15th for this incredible opportunity. These classes are open to the public for intermediate/advanced dancers ages 12-Adult and tickets can be found by clicking here.
