Turner testifies on Capitol Hill about power grid failure during winter storm
WASHINGTON โ Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner went before the U.S. House Energy and Commerce Committee to testify as a witness for a hearing about the power grid failures that happened during last monthโs winter storm. The hearing, called by U.S. Rep Lizzie Fletcher (D-Houston), will take a look at the statewide failures during the storm. Yet politically powerful natural gas companies, along with their regulators, have largely escaped the wrath of Gov. At least 57 people died during the winter storm that plunged large swaths of Texas into subfreezing temperatures and overwhelmed the stateโs electricity infrastructure, causing massive power outages. Thatโs because nearly half of the total power generation capacity for the main state electricity grid was offline as weather conditions caused failures in every type of power source: natural gas, coal, wind and nuclear.

HOUSTON โ Democrat Lizzie Fletcher wins reelection to U.S. House in Texas' 7th Congressional District, according to The Associated Press. In 2018, Democratic U.S. Rep. Lizzie Fletcher snagged the district away from former U.S. Rep. John Culberson, a Republican who had held the seat for 18 years. Fletcher is keeping the district, which is runs from southwest Houston, down Interstate 10 to west Houston and up to US 290, blue. At the drive-in rally in Houston, supporters used their horns to cheer on Jill Biden as she talked about her husbandโs vision for America and the importance of their votes. โFor the first time in a long time, winning Texas is possible,โ Jill Biden said. Early voting runs until Oct. 30.

HOUSTON โ Members of the Texas congressional delegation spoke Friday about legislation aimed at making Juneteenth a national holiday. U.S. Reps. Sheila Jackson Lee (D-Houston) led the event in Houstonโs Independence Heights, saying it was a historic day. โI believe that we are about to venture onto a historic moment for this nation and this is because there is more of a reckoning for what Juneteenth means,โ Jackson Lee said. Jackson Lee announced that she would introduce HR 7232 to Congress on Monday, which would aim to establish Juneteenth as a national holiday. โIt will be signed by a president,โ Jackson Lee said.
