RICHMOND, Texas – Fort Bend County sheriff’s deputies are investigating after they said a Richmond man was shot and killed inside of his home Thursday. According to Sheriff Eric Fagan, the 58-year-old man was shot three times by his 20-year-old son around 6:30 a.m. The suspect is in custody and charges have not yet been filed, deputies said. According to the sheriff, members of the Crisis Intervention Team have been called the residence numerous times over the past few years. “My prayers are with the family, keep them in your prayers,” said Fagan.

Community leaders help inspire children during Black History Month through virtual story times

Fort Bend County Sheriff Eric Fagan helps unleash the imaginations of children through the power of reading and storytelling, featuring children's books written by Black authors. HOUSTON – Community leaders are playing a role in inspiring children during Black History Month through virtual storytimes. The Children’s Museum of Houston and Fort Bend Children’s Discovery Center have collaborated in this effort by inviting several community leaders, such as Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner, Houston Independent School District Interim Superintendent Grenita Lathan, Fort Bend Independent School District leaders and more, according to a release. The effort will feature children’s books written by Black authors, according to the release. The books will help explain the contributions of African Americans in their struggles for freedom and equality while explaining the nation’s history, the release stated.

FBCSO detention officer admits to sexual contact with inmate, authorities say

RICHMOND, Texas – A Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Department employee with more than four years of service is now charged with improper sexual relationship with an inmate. Authorities said Monday that Nathan Carr, 31 -- a FBCSO civilian detention officer -- was removed from contact with inmates on Jan. 7 around 12:45 p.m. after an inmate came forward and told a sheriff’s department employee about what was happening between Carr and another inmate. Fort Bend County Sheriff Eric Fagan said the gender of the victim has not been released and “shouldn’t matter,” though added that the information would eventually be released. Fort Bend authorities said Carr was removed from contact with inmates and “admitted to his inappropriate conduct” and was arrested on Saturday at 9 p.m. and was relieved of duty without pay. Improper sexual relationship with an inmate is punishable of up to 2 years in prison and a $10,000 fine, Fagan said.

The sheriff's election in Fort Bend County made history, as the county hadn't had a Black sheriff since the 1800s. Walter Moses Burton, was the first Black sheriff in Fort Bend, and was the first Black sheriff in the United States at the time, according to KHOU. The ceremony was held at the Fort Bend Church, and a number of elected officials were in attendance at Fagan's swearing in ceremony, including Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee.

Fort Bend County elects first African American sheriff since reconstruction era

HOUSTON – A historic win in Fort Bend County for Sheriff-elect Eric Fagan. Fagan is now the second Black sheriff to be elected in the county’s history. Fagan was a Houston police officer for more than 30 years and has lived in Fort Bend County for nearly 20. Now that he’s elected, Fagan said he wants to bridge the gap between the sheriff’s department and the community. “I want to represent all the people of Fort Bend, not just African Americans, not just Hispanics, not just Muslims but everyone, Caucasian, everyone,” Fagan said.
