What you should and shouldn’t do when you get into a crash on a busy street

HOUSTON – There are a lot of thoughts that run through a person’s mind after being involved in a minor fender bender or a serious collision -- so much so, that many may be too shaken up to think clearly on what to do next.

Recently, a man was hit and killed by an oncoming vehicle after getting into a crash in northwest Harris County.

According to Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez, the man rear-ended a vehicle on the road. Both parties then exited their vehicles and began to argue. The argument escalated into a fight.

While the fight was happening, the at-fault driver was hit by at least one other vehicle.

These next steps are important to follow at the scene to ensure your safety and others following a collision, according to AARP.org.

  2. Get yourself and your vehicle out of danger
  3. Contact the police
  4. Collect important information
  5. Document the scene
  6. Avoid roadside discussions about responsibility
