Liberty volunteer firefighter accused of sexual abuse of child

LIBERTY, Texas – A volunteer assistant fire chief is accused of sexually abusing a child.

The Liberty County Sheriff's Office arrested 35-year-old James Russell Clymer Jr. at a friend's home on Monday.

Sheriff's Capt. Ken DeFoor said Clymer is charged with continuous sexual abuse of a young child.

"It’s the past several years that we know of so far, but the investigation is still continuing," said DeFoor.

DeFoor referred to the incident as a familial situation and said investigators were contacted by Child Protective Services after the child told her mother and school officials.

Liberty fire officials said Clymer had been with department as a volunteer since 2002 and was suspended as soon as the accusations came to light. A family member told KPRC Clymer also worked as a diesel mechanic.

“This has devastated all of us. All we can do is try to get through it," the family member said.

DeFoor said at this time, there are no indications other victims may be involved, but he stipulated the investigation is not complete.

Clymer's bail was set at $100,000.
