Minnesota officials clash on security plan for Chauvin trial
โActions to defund the police have consequences.โHouse Republicans echoed Gazelka's statement at a news conference of their own, saying the proposed fund does not address what they see as the increasing demonization of law enforcement. The governor was criticized by Republicans last summer for not sending in the National Guard sooner to quell unrest that turned violent in Minneapolis and St. Paul after Floyd's death sparked worldwide protests. AdPublic Safety Commissioner John Harrington said the state is coordinating with the FBI and the federal Joint Terrorism Task Force, in addition to more than 200 chief law enforcement officers across the state, to prepare for next month's trial. Harrington said the proposed fund would help reimburse law enforcement agencies from other parts of Minnesota, which he said are willing to send personnel but concerned about the extra costs. The House public safety committee approved the proposal Tuesday, with an additional provision requiring law enforcement agencies to follow a model policy created by the state's police licensing board for responding to protests.

Safety a higher priority than sales for many small retailers
Instead, only a handful of customers are in Mischief Toy Store at any time, and their visits are short and efficient. โWe are in the weird position of wanting people to shop, but not wanting them to come into the store,โ Marshall says. Some owners, Marshall included, have decided to set a limit even where there are no government orders. In toy stores, usually children can plow through bins of small toys and pick out what they want. While online shopping is helping Cherneyโs stores survive, it can take staffers 40 hours a week to keep the site fresh.
Video altered to make it look like Biden greeted wrong state
The video that was shared had been altered to change the text on a sign and the podium to refer to Tampa, Florida, instead of Minnesota. THE FACTS: An altered video circulating widely on social media appears to show Biden making a cringeworthy mistake: addressing Minnesotans during a campaign stop across the country in Tampa, Florida. โHello, Minnesota!โ Biden says after taking the stage. Several sources prove that Biden did not address the wrong state in his greeting and he was indeed in Minnesota. At a recent appearance in the warmer Tampa, Florida, on Oct. 29, Biden only wore a suit jacket.

Minnesota lawmakers ban neck restraints after Floyd's death
(Glenn Stubbe/Star Tribune via AP)ST. PAUL, Minn. The Minnesota Legislature passed a package of police accountability measures early Tuesday that includes a ban on neck restraints like the one that was used on George Floyd before his death in Minneapolis. Passage of the measures comes after nearly two months of negotiations that followed Floyd's death May 25. The Democratic governor had to call the special session to give lawmakers a chance to rescind the emergency powers hes been using to respond to the coronavirus pandemic. The session also gave legislators another chance to pass the policing measures and a bonding bill, which they were unable to agree on during last months special session. The bonding bill fell to the wayside as legislators worked to pass police reform as time expired on the session.
Minnesota ends special session without deal on policing
(AP Photo/Jim Mone)MINNEAPOLIS A special session of the Minnesota Legislature ended Saturday without agreement on remaking policing in the state where George Floyd was killed. I'm deeply disappointed that Senate Republicans ended the special session before our job was done," Senate Minority Leader Susan Kent tweeted. Were not walking away from Minnesota here, but I think we could all benefit from a breather, Gazelka said just before adjournment, Minnesota Public Radio News reported. The special session was necessary for Democratic Gov. If Walz seeks to extend his emergency powers an additional 30 days, he's required to call another special session for July 12 to let lawmakers object.
Couple wanted in connection with St. Paul fires believed to be in Texas; ATF offering $10K reward
HOUSTON The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives is offering up to $10,000 ($5,000 for each person) as a reward for any information that could lead to the arrest of a couple wanted in connection with fires that happened during the riots in St. Paul, Minnesota. When using Report It, select ATF St. Paul Field Division as the reporting agency. All tips can be submitted anonymously, but to claim a reward, you must give contact information.
Minnesota Senate GOP to block most policing overhaul plans
Minnesota State Troopers surrounded the statue of Christopher Columbus after it was toppled in front of the Minnesota State Capitol, Wednesday, June 10, 2020, in St. Paul, Minn. Senate Majority Leader Paul Gazelka and the chairman of the Senate judiciary committee, Warren Limmer, laid out their agenda shortly before the Legislature convened for a special session. Tim Walz and the House Democratic majority are backing a slate of proposals from the People of Color and Indigenous Caucus. Limmer said the five policing bills the Senate will pass before next Friday will include some of the noncontroversial Democratic proposals. But Democratic House Majority Ryan Winkler said the Senate Republican plan is too weak and falls short of what the moment requires.
To make a different kind of statement, a high school grad went to a protest in the cap and gown he didnโt get to wear
ST. PAUL, Minnesota โ Deveonte Joseph stood out among the protesters in St. Paul, Minnesota, calling for justice after the death of George Floyd. Instead of a mask or protective gear, the 17-year-old wore his cap and gown -- which he hasn't gotten to wear because the Covid-19 pandemic delayed in-person graduations across the US. Joseph said he decided to wear his commencement garb on Thursday night because he wanted to do something "to put positivity in the world." At first, he and his friends were just taking pictures around the neighborhood, but they saw the smoke from the nearby protest and decided to join in. Brit Lee, the sister of one of Joseph's friends, was also taking pictures and said police officers and protesters were congratulating him.
Nation's streets calmest in days; police credit curfews
(AP Photo/Matt Slocum)WASHINGTON The nations streets were calmer than they have been in days since the killing of George Floyd set off mostly peaceful but sometimes violent demonstrations over police brutality and injustice against African Americans. Earlier curfews and efforts by protesters to contain the lawlessness were credited with preventing more widespread damage to businesses in New York and other cities overnight. At least 12 deaths have been reported, though the circumstances in many cases are still being sorted out. Trump has pushed the nation's governors to take a hard line against the violence, tweeting on Tuesday that lowlifes and losers were taking over New York's streets. The New York Police Department credited the curfew, which was three hours earlier than the day before, with helping officers take control of the streets.
