Houston Astros, Carlos Correa avoid arbitration, settle on 1-year contract
The Astros have agreed to terms on a one-year contract with All-Star shortstop Carlos Correa, GM James Click announced Saturday. Correa had been the only remaining, unsigned arbitration-eligible player on the Astros roster. Correa helped lead the Astros to an 8-5 record in the postseason, falling just one win shy of a return to the World Series. AdThe now 26-year-old Correa also had his best season defensively in 2020, leading all ML shortstops in fielding pct. Correa and the Astros are set to open Spring Training later this month in West Palm Beach.

The Jacksonville Jaguars hired Trent Baalke as general manager Thursday, removing the interim tag from his title and pairing him with new coach Urban Meyer. Khan interviewed five minority candidates and Baalke for the teamโs open GM job. Baalke spent a dozen years with the 49ers, half as GM. Before moving to Jacksonville, Baalke spent three years (2017-19) working as an operations consultant for the NFL. Adding to the appeal: Khan, a billionaire businessman, has shown a penchant for patience and a willingness to spend big.

MLB executive, ex-pitcher Young joins hometown Rangers as GM
ARLINGTON, Texas โ The Texas Rangers hired Chris Young as executive vice president and general manager Friday, bringing the Major League Baseball executive home to work under president of baseball operations Jon Daniels, the club's GM since 2005. The return to Texas comes after Young interviewed for the GM opening with the New York Mets, who recently abandoned an effort to hire a president of baseball operations to focus on the GM search. Young was the senior vice president in charge of on-field operations and the umpires with MLB. He worked closely with the Rangers on baseball issues related to construction of Globe Life Field, which opened this past season. โChris Youngโs background and experiences will be a huge asset to our baseball operations group," Daniels said.

Astros make qualifying offer to several free agents, including George Springer
HOUSTON โ The baseball offseason is off and running and Sunday the Astros announced their decisions regarding qualifying offers for their free agents. Astros General Manager James Click announced in a statement that they declined the $18.9 set qualifying offer for Josh Reddick, Michael Brantley and Brad Peacock. The Astros did, as expected, make an official offer for outfielder George Springer. Springer is one of the most sought after free agents this winter. The Astros believe they will still make their best run at keeping Springer in Houston, where he has been since 2014 on the big league level.

NBA to reopen facilities this week in states relaxing stay-at-home orders, according to report
(CNN) -- The NBA plans to reopen team practice facilities Friday in areas where local governments have relaxed stay-at-home restrictions amid the coronavirus pandemic, according to an ESPN report. The NBA plans to find alternative training arrangements for players in states where stay-at-home orders remain fully intact. The league's move to reopen facilities doesn't mean the season is starting anytime soon, according to ESPN's sources. The NBA also canceled the New Orleans Pelicans-Sacramento Kings game that night, and the season was suspended shortly thereafter. "The NBA will use this hiatus to determine next steps for moving forward in regard to the coronavirus pandemic," the league said in a statement.

HOUSTON โ According to Houston Astros owner Jim Crane, the team will address the open field manager job before they move on to hiring a general manager. Currently, Crane is working with the remaining front-office leadership group to fill the duties of fired GM Jeff Luhnow. During interviews Friday night at the Astros Diamond Dreams Gala, Crane said he would start interviewing candidates for the general manager position next week. Itโs very late in the game for a GM hire, and Crane has mentioned internal candidates will get interviews. GM recalls 814K pickups, cars to fix brake, battery problems
DETROIT โ General Motors is recalling more than 814,000 pickup trucks and cars in the U.S. to fix problems with electronic brake controls and battery cables. The first recall covers nearly 464,000 Cadillac CT6 sedans and Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500 pickup trucks from 2019. Dealers will reprogram the brake computer starting Jan. 27, according to documents posted Thursday on the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration website. The second recall covers over 350,000 2019 and 2020 Silverado and Sierra 1500 pickups. Starting Jan. 27, dealers will inspect the cables and clean the connectors if needed.
