Stormy Saturday morning in store for Houston; Here’s what we know

HOUSTON – It has been nice to have a break from the rain for a few days, but now we will have to deal with it again overnight and into Saturday morning.

The good news is this will just be an event we will see in the morning and after that, we will clear up pretty quick with no more rain chances until the following weekend.

That being said, we could see a quick dumping of 1-3 inches of rain for areas. With the ground already saturated from last week’s rainfall, this could lead to some street flooding problems.

Let’s take a look at what we will be dealing with.

Overnight into Saturday morning

As of Friday afternoon, some areas of southeast Texas are starting to see some light to moderate showers. This is ahead of the main show developing out toward San Antonio which should begin to move into southeast Texas in the early morning hours of Saturday.

Futuretrack for 3 a.m. Saturday

Futuretrack is picking up on two rounds of rainfall moving through both in the morning hours Saturday. The first round will be a cluster of storms which should begin to move into southeast Texas around 2-3 a.m. in the morning.

Futuretrack for 7 a.m. Saturday

A second, larger batch of rainfall looks to move through closer to dawn on Saturday. This will be a line of storms which moves in from the west.

Futuretrack rainfall totals

Most of the area looks to get rainfall with this event. A swath of the area could see higher rainfall totals of up to and over 3 inches. Most of the area will see at least an inch from the storms before they move on out of here later in the morning hours.

Severe threats for Saturday morning

While the severe threat is highest to the west across Central Texas, the Houston area does have a low risk. A couple of stronger storms could produce some damaging wind gusts. The tornado threat is very low, but not completely zero. Make sure to have a way to receive weather warnings in case we do see a tornado warning pop up in the middle of the night.

Galveston Mardi Gras!

The good news is the rain should move out of here by midday Saturday. Sunday looks to be amazing in the weather department and that will repeat for the rest of the week until another system moves in next weekend. If you are going to Galveston for any Mardi Gras events, just know Saturday morning will be wet, but it should move out in time for any afternoon and evening events.
