No flooding during Beta in southwest Houston. Residents credit Project Brays for sparing homes from flooding
Project Brays is a $480 million improvement project thatโs been under construction since 2000. Residents in Meyerland and Westbury credit the improvements that including widening the channel and bridge modifications, for sparing their homes from flooding during Tropical Storm Beta. Before Harvey, the majority of the work involved with Project Brays had been finished. While Project Brays protected that area from flooding during Beta, every major rain event in Houston is different. Thatโs the big thinking going forward , thatโs going to take a much larger investment," Hidalgo said.

This weekendโs rain: A gully washer for some, not enough for others
But as you see in the maps below, most of the rain on both Friday and Saturday favored areas north and west of the I-10 corridor. Normally, when we get multiple chances for rain, some other areas may get a shot at some natural grass fertilizer. Some of the reason for that was the overall positioning of the jet stream in the higher part of the atmosphere that was oriented from southwest to northeast. Contrast that to when a surface cold front plows through and the rain basically follows the direction of where the front is coming in from. We will get another round of rain coming next weekend, but thereโs some real early summer heat lurking mid-week as well.
Rain moves in late tomorrow: Wet work week coming!
Tomorrow, the clouds return and isolated showers will start in the morning with on and off showers to follow by Sunday evening into Monday. Monday kicks off a fairly wet and unsettled work week with a potential for heavy rain and strong storms late in the afternoon. A vigorous cold front will slowly move through the state, stall near the coast, leaving rain chances in play for the next three days with highs in the low 70s. 10-Day ForecastThe result is a ten day forecast that has plenty of rain for the start of the week along with warmer than normal temperatures until mid week. The rain should be out of here by Thursday in time for a dry but cool Valentineโs day and one half of next weekend.
