Man charged after high-speed crash in SW Houston kills baby

HOUSTON – A man has been charged after authorities said a crash in southwest Houston led to the death of a baby inside the vehicle he was driving.

Charles A. Washington, 28, is charged with manslaughter and attempt to take a weapon from a police officer.

Houston police said the crash happened on Dec. 19 in the 12300 block of Almeda Road at around 5:05 p.m.

According to police, the crash involved an Infiniti SUV, driven by Washington, and at least two other vehicles. A baby was found unresponsive in the SUV and was transported to a hospital, where the child was pronounced dead.

Police said as officers attempted to detain Washington, he became aggressive and lunged at them. The officers were able to detain Washington and he was transported to an area hospital for evaluation.

Two child passengers in the SUV, a 13-year-old girl and an 8-year-old boy, were taken to a hospital to be treated for their injuries.

Homicide detectives learned Washington was driving the vehicle at a high rate of speed on Almeda Road and struck at least two vehicles before coming to a stop.

Washington is currently in the Harris County Jail.
