Concerns raised after man claims to be owner of dog found in bad shape

HOUSTON – Gabriel, named by volunteers at the Harris County Animal Shelter, came into the shelter in bad shape last week.

Volunteers asked the rescue community for help.

"When we first saw Gabriel, our immediate concern was that he was in really poor condition, especially to be in a shelter environment. He has mange, which is a skin infection,” said La Chrystal Ricke, of the rescue group, Reggie's Friends.

Shortly after the group took Gabriel to the veterinarian, someone claiming to be Gabriel’s owner came forward.

Under state law, a three-day stray hold allows the owner to claim their pet.

They were within the three-day period.

"He had parasites on his skin. He had internal parasites, which needed to be treated. And so we got him started on a regimen of medication," Ricke said.

Harris County Judge Ed Emmett’s office told KPRC 2 that the judge ordered that Gabriel remain, for now, at the vet's office, where he gets constant care.

Once he is strong enough, Gabriel is to return to the county’s shelter, and from there he could be returned to the person claiming to be his owner.

Rescuers say Gabriel will face a lifetime of health problems.

They said the best place for him is with them.

"Ultimately, we would like the judge to grant us permanent custody of Gabe so that once we do get him healthy, we can ensure lifetime health for him," Ricke said.
