Click2Daily: Local doctors, nurses support Red Nose Day

HOUSTON – People around the world are getting silly for a serious cause.

Thursday, May 25 is Red Nose Day, a fundraising event that raises millions of dollars for kids in need, and doctors at the Texas Medical Center are jumping on board.

According to  https://rednoseday.org/our-impact, "The money raised supports projects that ensure kids are safe, healthy, educated and empowered. Red Nose Day funds programs in all 50 states and in some of the poorest communities in Latin America, Asia and Africa."

Today, professor of pediatrics Dr. Mark Sanders is a pediatrician at Children’s Memorial Hermann Hospital and assistant professor of pediatrics at UTHealth.

"We take care of some very sick children here, and truth of the matter is a lot of them are very much under served in a variety of areas, and one of them is a lack of resources, a lack of nutrition, and we do our best overall to try and take full care of these kiddos... and that includes showing our support for childhood poverty," Dr. Sanders said.

Even the pediatric transport nurses and pilot of Memorial Hermann Red Duke Trauma Center's Life Flight Helicopter jumped in on the fun.

"We excel in taking care of critical care kids so we really try to put our best effort into making the kids feel much better," Life Flight transport nurse said.

Red Nose Day has raised more than $60 million in its first two years since launching in the U.S. in 2015, including more than $36 million in 2016.

"Even some of those that have the best support systems," Dr. Sanders said, "Everybody can use a leg up."

Worldwide, the initiative is responsible for raising more than $1 billion.
