Man in custody after gunfire, standoff along Greens Bayou, chief says

HOUSTON – An armed man was arrested Friday after officers fired at him prompting a brief standoff on the banks of Greens Bayou in north Houston, authorities said.

Houston Police Chief Art Acevedo said that someone reported a suspicious man with a gun about 9:25 a.m. on the banks of the bayou.

Officers responded and began trying to talk with the man, Acevedo said. When officers noticed the man was armed, they fired beanbag rounds at him and knocked him down, Acevedo said. The man came back up and started waving the gun around, at which point five officers fired their guns, hitting the man once, Acevedo said.

"I think it's commendable on their part that they went to that first," Acevedo said. "It did not work. He came up again and that's when, in fear for their lives, obviously, they discharged multiple rounds."

The man was shot in the leg and his injuries do not appear to be life-threatening, Acevedo said.

The chief said he believes the man may have been suffering from mental distress.

The five officers who fired will be placed on administrative leave during the investigation, which is standard procedure, Acevedo said.

The man will likely be charged with aggravated assault, Acevedo said.

No officers were injured.
