Powell signals Fed will keep aiding economy with bond buying

The speculation was fueled by comments from several regional Fed bank presidents, including Raphael Bostic of the Atlanta Fed and Robert Kaplan of Dallas. Bostic said last week that he was โhopeful that in fairly short order we can start to recalibrateโ the bond purchases. And Lael Brainard, another governor, said Wednesday that the current level of bond buying โwill remain appropriate for quite some time.โSome regional Fed bank presidents have signaled that any reduction in bond purchases is probably a long way off. Still, Powell also said he was quite optimistic that the economy would rebound later this year, once COVID-19 vaccines are widely distributed.
Princeton faces federal inquiry after acknowledging racism
The Trump administration has opened an investigation into racial bias at Princeton University, saying that the school's recent acknowledgment of racism on campus amounts to a โshockingโ and โseriousโ admission of discrimination. In a letter to the university on Wednesday, the U.S. Education Department said the school's acknowledgment of racism conflicts with previous assurances that Princeton complies with federal anti-discrimination laws. The investigation is the Trump administration's latest salvo against schools and colleges that seek to address racism. The department cited several passages in university President Christopher Eisgruber's letter detailing efforts to combat systematic racism. During a speech at the National Archives on Thursday, Trump decried efforts to teach about systemic racism at schools and universities.
