Charges against man convicted by Goines testimony 12 years ago dropped
HOUSTON โ The charges against a man who was convicted of drug crimes in 2008 on the basis of testimony by then-Houston police narcotics Officer Gerald Goines have been dropped. Otis Mallet Jr. was cleared of the charges after Harris County District Attorney Kim Ogg filed a motion saying that โno credible evidence existsโ against him. โWhat happened to Mr. Mallet was the result of deliberate lies testified to by Gerald Goines and relied upon prosecutors years ago,โ Ogg said in a written statement. This dismissal is a down payment on restoring community trust in our criminal justice system.โFormer HPD officer Gerald Goines. Goines is accused of lying on the affidavit used to obtain the warrant that led to the raid.
Judge to recommend manโs conviction be overturned after ex-HPD officer Gerald Goines gave false testimony
HOUSTON โ A judge said Monday that she will recommend that a man convicted 11 years ago based on the testimony of ex-Houston Police officer Gerald Goines, should be exonerated. Disgraced ex-officer Goines, who is now accused in the botched 2019 Harding Street drug raid, gave testimony that resulted in Malletโs conviction. Judge Ramona Franklinโs decision came after hearing evidence that Goines gave false testimony during Malletโs trial. Harris County District Attorney Kim Ogg joined with Malletโs defense team to ask the judge to declare Mallet innocent. The Mallet case is one of 14,000 cases worked by Goines that are currently under review by the DAโs office.
