The KPRC 2 and UTMB Health Athletes of the Week for the Week of April 24 is the Fort Bend Marshall boys relay team.

Cypress Springs third-year head coach Oji Fagan has been “chopping” his way through the Houston high school football wilderness to lead his Panthers to a 3-0 record entering district play.

Fort Bend Marshall has become a powerhouse in 5A Texas High School football, always in contention for a State Championship run and having athletes develop into college prospects.

Fort Bend Marshall has been a hot-bed for high-level recruits over the past five years with the likes of Devon Achane, Malik Hornsby, Christian Williams and most recently Zachary Chapman, Trent Thomas and Ja’koby Banks.

For the sixth time since 2013, Fort Bend Marshall boys track and field are Class 5A UIL Texas State Champions.

On the heels of a Spring chock full of highlight reel performances showcased on the oval, it’s time for H-Town’s premier competitors to shine. The UIL Track & Field State Meet will be taking place from today through Saturday at Mike A. Myers Stadium in Austin, TX.

HOUSTON – There was a considerable shift in this week’s VYPE Houston Class 5A Top 10 rankings.

The Class 5A rankings have been all shook up following the start of the season.

This figures to be one of the tougher districts in the Greater Houston area, headlined by a perennial Regional power in Fort Bend Marshall that has two State Final appearances in the last four seasons.

It was another busy week of Texas high school football here in Houston.

Last week's dominant season-opening performances from Fort Bend Marshall's Ja'koby Banks and Chris Marshall will not be the exception in 2021. They are the expected.

HOUSTON - After one week we know this, Fort Bend Marshall is once again really good.

MISSOURI CITY — Fort Bend Marshall's offense was in late-season form during the Buffalos' 68-34 season-opening rout of Aldine Eisenhower on Thursday night at Hall Stadium.

Welcome to the start of the 2021-2022 school year and another season of H-Town High School Sports with Todd Freed!

This district is Marshall's to lose. The Buffalos have too much power and punch on both sides of the ball and are legitimate contenders for a state championship.

"I'm just so thankful for [Ray] Zepeda and [Principal] Dr. Henry for believing in me and the vision that I have for Cypress Springs," Fagan said in a phone interview with VYPE. "It's a place where there's definitely some seeds there that we saw when we got to Fort Bend Marshall. For the past 10 years, Fort Bend Marshall has been home as a part of coach James Williams' staff. When Fagan arrived at Fort Bend Marshall prior to the 2011 season, the program had never won more than 10 games. In the 47-43 win, Fort Bend Marshall was facing and fourth and 12 with 33 seconds left.

HUMBLE - In the past three weeks, Crosby has been far from the favorite. 3 Fort Bend Marshall, a program that has played for a state championship each of the last two seasons. Powered by Reggie Branch's four-touchdown performance, a 28-point fourth quarter and timely defensive stands, Crosby upended Fort Bend Marshall 37-28 at Humble ISD's Turner Stadium to advance to the State Semifinals. Fort Bend Marshall was led by Roland Harvey going 21 of 38 for 369 yards and three touchdowns. Ja'Vion Matthews had 169 yards and two touchdowns receiving on 14 catches.

Several Houston-area high school football teams, including North Shore, Ridge Point, Crosby, Fort Bend Marshall, Manvel, Katy and Clear Falls, will fit the field Friday and Saturday, looking to punch their ticket to the state’s semifinal round the following week. Marshall takes on Crosby at 1 p.m. Friday at Turner Stadium in Humble.

In the Houston-area, teams like Fort Bend Marshall, Crosby, Manvel, Clear Falls, Katy, North Shore and Ridge Point are the last teams standing. The Ridge Point Panthers began the year 0-2 with losses to Dickinson and C.E. “That’s where we turned the corner at the bye week,” said senior wide receiver John Paul Richardson, who will play at Oklahoma State next fall. HOUSTON - Fort Bend ISD is the first school district in Houston to officially push back the start of the 2020-2021 athletic calendar. This means the athletics season for Fort Bend ISD will have to wait. Fort Bend ISD was originally planning to make a return to Strength and Conditioning Camps this week to continue preparing for the start of the season. Fort Bend ISD coaches were not available for comment at the time of this story.
