Galveston Marathon and Half Marathon canceled due to current state of emergency in Texas
GALVESTON, Texas โ The City of Galveston has decided to cancel the Galveston Marathon and Half Marathon due to the current state of emergency in Texas and the devastation in Galveston due to the recent winter storms. โThis decision was not made lightly and without much thought to the racers and the city of Galveston and its residents,โ the eventโs Facebook page said Thursday. Marathon directors said they cannot โfurther stress the Galveston infrastructure and take away the needed resources of the city crews and police to put on a run.โAdThe Facebook post said race directors will update everyone with more information later. โPlease know that we have been race directors for over 30 years and have never had to cancel a race due to the weather,โ The post said. โThis is an extreme situation for everyone down here.โ

GALVESTON, Texas โ City of Galveston property owners who sustained property damage during Tropical Storm Beta may be eligible for temporary tax relief, Galveston authorities announced Thursday. Property owners are encouraged to complete an exemption application which is available online and submit it to the Galveston County Appraisal District. The Texas Tax Code provides for a temporary exemption for property owners who are victims of natural disasters. The City of Galveston adopted its tax rate four days prior to the disaster proclamation on September 17, 2020. Homeowners must apply for the temporary tax relief and must submit the application to the Galveston Central Appraisal District.
Man sues Galveston for $1M over controversial 2019 arrest
GALVESTON, Texas โ Donald Neely, whoโs controversial arrest last year sparked outrage, filed a $1 million lawsuit on Wednesday against the city of Galveston and its police department. In August 2019, two Galveston police officers on horseback arrested Neely and escorted him using a rope clipped to his handcuffs. After viral photos and videos of the incident sparked outrage across the country, the department apologized for โthe negative perception of this actionโ and said it would stop using the transportation technique. Mounted officers lead handcuffed man across streetNeely was arrested on criminal trespassing charges, which were later dismissed, according to the lawsuit. Neely is seeking $1 million in damages for the emotional distress caused him by the Aug. 3, 2019 arrest.

Galveston officials are cracking down on those who litter at the beach
Over the weekend, Galveston officials started increasing efforts to punish those who litter on the island. According to a release by the City of Galveston, cigarette butts, plastic bags, styrofoam cups, and bottles are common items left on the beach. Not only does littering affect birds and marine life and is destructive to natural resources, but officials also say itโs an eyesore. Officials ask that visitors not only collect their trash but bring it to the designated bins. โOur crews work around the clock to help keep the beaches clean and we encourage all who visit to do their share in keeping the coastal environment clean, safe and healthy.โ
10 years later: Remnants of Ike leave lessons learned from survivors
LEAGUE CITY, Texas โ Hurricane Ike roared ashore in Galveston shortly after 2 a.m., on Sept. 13, 2008, pushing a 22-foot storm surge that flooded 80 percent of the buildings in the city. โI learned that I'm really resilient and that it's OK to not have it together and to need help," she said. Hurricane Ike caused $27 billion in damage. A bitter political fight over replacing 569 public housing units destroyed by Ike has stalled reconstruction. But Matlock said she learned from Ike that heart and family make a home, not the house.
