U.S. Rep. Joe Barton apologizes for graphic photo circulated online

HOUSTON – Texas Congressman Joe Barton released a statement Wednesday after a nude photo of him circulated online.

The Texas Tribune first reported the statement, which reads: "While separated from my second wife, prior to the divorce, I had sexual relationships with other mature adult women. Each was consensual. Those relationships have ended. I am sorry I did not use better judgment during those days. I am sorry that I let my constituents down."

Barton announced his re-election bid earlier this month.

The Texas Tribune reported the photo appeared on an anonymous Twitter account.
Barton said he is thinking about his political future.

"You're as aware of what was posted as I am," Barton is quoted saying to The Texas Tribune. "I am talking to a number of people, all of whom I have faith in and am deciding how to respond, quite frankly."

A spokeswoman said Wednesday that Barton had no plans to resign and had filed for re-election.

Whoever is behind posting the photo is not clear.

Barton is the former chairman of the House Energy and Commerce Committee. He is the longest-serving member of Congress from Texas.
