Space Center of Houston visitors gather to watch SpaceX Falcon Heavy launch

HOUSTON – In Space City, at Space Center Houston, about 100 people watched the successful launch of Elon Musk's SpaceX Falcon Heavy Tuesday in Florida.

“It's a wonderful thing that people on this earth can work together in unison," said Tim Firks, of Wisconsin.

“It was phenomenal to see the simultaneous landing and the Tesla out in space with a robot inside playing David Bowie was absolutely amazing,” said Kellie Ewasko of Houston.

Inside the rocket barreling towards space was a red Tesla of Musk’s with a mannequin inside.

This marked the first successful launch of a rocket this powerful by Musk’s privately owned company, SpaceX.

It was streamed into Space Center Houston to excite young people about space exploration.

“You have a powerful, powerful brand, a powerful person that's out there that's just excited about exploring,” said Daniel Newmyer, vice president of education at Space Center Houston. “And it brings that excitement and will help people say, ‘Hey we could do something more extraordinary then has been ever done and let's try a whole lot of different ways.'”

That excitement rose to applause when a pair of rocket boosters successfully landed back on a launch pad.

“The icing on the cake,” said Firks. “It doesn't get better than that does it?”

A seasoned launch watcher from Orlando, who was visiting Houston, was keeping track of weather updates from home.

She even received a sonic boom warning.

“Normally, you just hear them when they come back in orbit, but today they said you could hear it when the launch is happening and it's really cool and it shakes the whole house,” said Melissa Ewasko of Orlando.
