Rockets sign Brandan Wright for remainder of season

HOUSTON – The Houston Rockets were content to not pull the trigger on a deal at the league’s trade deadline last week.

One reason was their confidence that there would be players available and interested in joining the Rockets after they were bought out of their contracts in the days that followed.

That plan panned out as the team officially signed forward/center Brandan Wright on Monday for the remainder of the season after he was bought out of his contract by the Memphis Grizzlies.

Wright, in his 10th NBA season, appeared in 27 games for the Grizzlies this season.

In 427 career games, all but 62 as a reserve, Wright has averaged 7.0 points, 3.6 rebounds and nearly a block each contest, while averaging 16.2 minutes per game.

Wright, who is 6 feet 10 inches tall and weighs 235 pounds, was originally the eighth overall pick in the 2007 NBA draft and has shot 60.7 percent from the floor in his career. He would have the second-highest field goal percentage among active players if he had enough attempts to qualify.

Houston is also expected to finalize a deal with wing Joe Johnson after he was bought out by the Sacramento Kings.

The Rockets (42-13) will play at the Minnesota Timberwolves on Tuesday night.
