Man charged in fatal shooting during robbery in 5th Ward

HOUSTON – A man was arrested and charged after being accused of killing another man June 16 in a shooting in the 5th Ward.

The shooting was reported just before 2:30 p.m. in the 4800 block of Lyons Avenue.

Kevin Brantley, 21, is charged with capital murder for the death of 43-year-old Calvin Freeman. 

Homicide detectives said Freeman was with a group of friends in front of his business when two people got out of a vehicle and tried to rob the group. When Freeman tried to run, he was shot multiple times, investigators said. 

He was taken to Ben Taub General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Another man was beaten and suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

Police said Brantley and the other suspect fled in a light brown Hyundai with Texas license plates FMB-0929.

After further investigation, Brantley was identified and was arrested on Dec. 6.

The second suspect is still on the run.
